No, they would hear everything.
It's the *ping* that let's the enemy know that they are out of ammo. That's when they move in to attack.
The friendly soldiers devised a plan to counter this, by dropping a bullet shell on a rock. It made a similar *ping*, leading enemy soldiers into an ambush.
I learned this in history class last month =D
