Umm, marriage is also a religious practice, so are 'civil unions'. the whole monogamy thing comes from christianity/catholocism/ignorance. America would probably still be full of natives if christianity never got to europe (more specifically england). Most of europe and england were pagans, large numbers of whom were polygamists and/or polyamorists, so even if they had colonised America this whole issue would not exist, and the world would quite probably be a much better place.
