I think contemplation is more often a result of, not a cause, of suffering. Generally speaking, happy people have less reason for reflection and introspection. They don't feel much need to dissect and contemplate conditions, because they are content.
Note: there are very happy and deep people - I'm just speaking in general.
I have found this to be true of myself, but I think that due to my intelligence and my/our ability to stand aside from ourselves and objectively judge ourselves in order to understand what we do, why we do it, whether this is good or bad and whether or not it can be improved, this helps us try and eliminate the things that make us feel bad.

He pretty much sees how smart he is, and then goes about trying to figure out whether he would be happier if he got smarter, going off of the assumption that he is stupid.
