The hack
OK so bear with me here.

First of all let me explain why I don't know about this. I started playing Toribash sometime in 09 (I don't know when check my join date) and played until the end of that year. I only returned to it at the beginning of this year. Through the powers of deduction we can establish that I was not in-game or on the forums during 2010 when I presume this happened.

So my questions to you are

A) What was this big "hack"?
B) Who did it?
C) Why did they do it?
D) What measures have been put in place to stop it from happening again?
E) What did they do/what were the effects it had on the community?

If there is a specific thread or board for this I apologize it just came up in my mind then and I thought I'd ask.

Anyway thanks doods.

I don't think people like to talk about it much but I'm sure there are poeple out there with the same question as you. Looking at the questions,
A) The big hack was a hack of the forum that took place sometime around mid December, I believe, 2010.
B) Supposedly Veb.
C) The post Veb made was bagging out hamp but we will never really know if we was hacked or was just butthurt about something.
D) Just tighter security. No-one that knows exactly will release this info however.
E) I'm not sure of the specifics. What I believe happened was that the hacker did something to that databases. The forums were so badly mangled, that hampa resorted to a backup from June/July that year (I think). This meant that the forums were exactly as they were back then. Meaning that banned people were unbanned, accounts which were mader after June/July ceased to exist, people were in different clans, items were in weird places, users had the same passwords as they did back then, staff with usergroups which they obtained in the period between the backup and the hack didn't have them anymore etc...

Basically, everything that was created or that happened between the backup and the hack was completely obliterated. It was pretty nasty...
Oh lawd. Sounds pretty flippin sad.

I remember Veb as being cool. Anyway thank you Mr. Solax sir that was very useful.

... From what you can see, perhaps.

People are mostly over the rollback.

Meanwhile, thousands of people are banned, many of them don't know WHY (because apparently they can't read a ban reason and follow simple instructions), and support's got a constant torrent of emails that all have to be dealt with individually and take up a LOT of time to handle.

Read as: Please don't presume to judge the severity of situations if you're not fully informed on them. Thanks!

I feel special that mine was one of those >10,000 accounts. I was so scared when I got that email.

So that was a separate thing altogether?

Thanks hanz0.

I guess so. Different people will interpret "the hack" differently though. An example is shown right here. From a normal forum user, the more visibly devastating would be the forum rollback. But when talking to a staff member such as an admin or a smod, they will likely say that the Germany Password hack was worse.

hanz0 says: Calling it the "Germany Password hack" is incredibly misleading and misinformed.
