Acid Lake Research Logs

439:20:71

The team sent to the Yellow Mountains returned with several chemical samples. Unfortunately, they experienced casualties. The creatures that attacked them were repelled with Lightbenders, although the atmosphere hardly permitted enough radiation to power the guns. Recordings of the creatures' attack are being examined by the biology department. None of the creature's bodies were recovered for chemical sampling.

Sulfur crystal structures E, M4, and O have been determined unnatural and are undergoing further tests.

439:85:06

The armored exploration squad we sent to the mud pits returned with fascinating news: They discovered a seemingly endless plain of crystalized sheets of various chemical substances. Unfortunately, they were unable to explore this terrain, as the chemicals were too volatile for human exploration, and they corroded metal at an extremely fast pace. A request has been submitted to Engineering for a plastic-armored remote collection vehicle.

440:16:28

Our fungal sampling from the Silent Valley turned out to be very interesting. The fungi seem to thrive on the chemical vapors in the atmosphere of the Acid Lake; we have created an adjoining cave to begin cultivating them. Their chemical properties are most remarkable, nearly all of them posses psychoactive chemical compounds the likes of which we have never observed before. Several types of chemical extracts have been sent to Biology for animal testing.

440:29:91

The liquid and gas samples sent to us by the Windy Mountains cave exploration team have been analyzed in depth. The 'water' they sent us was not H2O at all, but a very strange type of organic oil, possessing nearly all the same qualities as water, save its surface tension, which is abnormally high. Purified samples have been sent to Engineering, for testing as a possible mechanical lubricant.

440:51:35

Nightmare Command submitted an order for a very large quantity of our 'Lazarus' compound. Apparently, they have found a pass out of these infernal mountains, and are going to blast out a new base with a Lazarus bomb. All staff has been working overtime to complete the order as soon as possible, we are all anxious to see what the Deep Nightmare team will bring back in ways of chemical and material samples.

441:02:27

With the Lazarus order finished, we can now explore an interesting phenomenon we observed while working with the Lazarus compound: There may be potential for crystosphere development, as it reacts strongly with many of our bacterial strains. Early tests confirm high-yield energy discharge similar to basic Lazarus detonation energies. The wave-form of the energy seems to follow the 'Rule of Six,' originally a superstitious belief among the exploration team. After all of our experiments, we have begun to believe that the Rule of Six has some sort of deep connection with this realm. Some members of our research team insist that the Nightmare Realm will yield at least two more crystospheres, since we currently are on the verge of producing our fourth type. Our staff is divided on the issue, as all of our observations lead us to conclude that these four compounds embody the four basic outlets of power for crystosphere bacterial strains; the first three being forms of power we could easily coax out of them in the Natural Realm, the fourth being the new, Lazarus-compound power of the Nightmare Realm. Crystosphere research and development continues.

441:38:84

The Deep Nightmare team has established their base around the perimeter of the crater formed by the Lazarus bomb explosion. They are constructing six towers, and report that as soon as they can set up main headquarters, shielding, and power supply, they will begin exploration of the realm. From the limited samples they have sent back, we can hardly disdain their caution. The air is quite toxic, and contains dissolved cyanides and at least 12 types of abiotic neurotoxins; something we have never before encountered. We are not sure what natural phenomenon produces these toxins, as they cannot have been produced by any creature, plant, or fungi. The rock samples are semi-porous, and with slight modification, we have been able to make them accept crystospheres.

441:71:10

The black crystosphere was officially stabilized today. There was an exceedingly disturbing lab accident: One of our staff was infected with the Lazarus strain, became violent, and was taken immediate action against by a security guard. The guard fired several pistol rounds into the scientist's head and chest section, but these apparently had no effect but to madden the infected researcher. A stasis cube was erected around him, and we had to bring in a Lightbender to silence him. Even then, removal of the head had little effect on his fervor, and we had to literally cut the scientist into small portions before it was deemed safe to lower the stasis field. Each segment of his body was motile, almost disturbingly sentient. Many of our staff has expressed a strong desire to return to Xenotech, in the Natural Realm.

441:92:84

The Deep Nightmare team reported their completion of Control Tower 2, and are eager to begin detoxifying the atmosphere within their perimeter. We have been able to find absorption compounds for the cyanides and 5 of the abiotic neurotoxins, but there are still more components that need to be neutralized before the atmosphere will be safe for unfiltered breathing. Currently, the excess raw power from the turbines is being used in a brute force ionizing field to clean the air of the remaining chemical and particulate matter by electrical means.

442:16:38

Today, the modified Unknown was released back through the portal to the Natural Realm. The Biology department requisitioned as many black crystospheres as we had in storage, applied them to Unknown, and as he was undergoing the bacterial change, threw the little amoeba back through the portal, and then destroyed the link. We are now no longer a part of the Xenotech corporation. Control tower 3 has been activated as the exploration base, we are all anxiously awaiting samples from their first voyage.

442:45:89

The Deep Nightmare exploration team has not shown up yet, their positioning units have gone offline, and they do not show up on radar or imaging. Tower 4 is nearing completion as the new optics and weapons lab.

We discovered another interesting property of the rock so common in and around the Deep Nightmare crater: It's semi-porous nature is unnaturally advanced, as if it was part of a living creature. Although the biology department is in firm disagreement with us, we have found micro-tubules in the rock resembling capillaries and arteries. The crystosphere strains work remarkably well with the rock, and easily bond with it.

442:74:15

A second Deep Nightmare exploration team is being formed to cautiously search out the previous expedition. Volunteers have been understandably few, and recruiting has been slow. Tower 4 has requisitioned a great deal of assorted crystospheres for weapons development and optics testing. A laser is being developed to harness the mutative power of the crystosphere strains and their refractive effects against intense light radiation.

443:02:28

Many of our staff are being relocated to Control Tower 5, an upcoming chemistry laboratory and defense outpost. We have also been busy moving materials and equipment into the Deep Nightmare area, in preparation for a major change in the primary research facility location.

Something most bizarre occurred this morning: A researcher came in, short of breath, yelling for a computer console. He said he had just woken from a dream, and that it was imperative that he write down the blueprints for the device he had seen. He immediately preoccupied himself with the console, and would answer no questions until the bizarre schematic was completed. As soon as he had finished the drawing, he began shaking, and muttering 'It can see... It can already see...'

We decided to call a med squad, but, sensing our intentions, the scientist sprinted for the door, and, vaulting over the security fence, jumped straight into the Acid Lake. The smell afterwards was most unpleasant.

334:27:98

Finished evacuation of lab, everything is being relocated to Tower 5 and 6. End of logs.

Re: Creative writing bit
Thats really in-depth, and VERY original and entertaining to read. It seems like a prologue of some sort, or simply something you'd find in an abandoned research lab... Thats what it is, isn't it? XD

Thats amazing, the wording is VERY good, especially for a log, and some of the science-based answers are intriguing. It makes plenty of sense to me (although, its a mystery as to how these things could come about ><) but still has a massive air of mystery.

I loved this part though;

Thats just funny.

Re: Creative writing bit
Haha you beat me to it Qeg, I was going to quote that part. XD

Anyway, very well written, makes me want to play whatever game is going to be based on it. . .

. . .or maybe you should skip the whole game thing and just make a short story or novel out of it. :O!
