Probably also because he stuck to the Heavy branch of Smithing and as such, cannot improve Elven stuff to maximum strength.
Well, he could just dump a level perk point on Elven, but what's the point when he could use it on something else? He already has his Orcish stuff after all.
I also used a Skyforge Steel Waraxe up until I got Ebony smithing. It was better once improved than what I could improve an Orcish waraxe to at the time.

'Cause orcish armour is better than elven if i remember right.
Anyway, i'll be making myself Daedric armour soon, just need the daedra hearts. Any protips where to find/loot etc. them? I heard that the shrine of azura place or something has one or two of those dremora (or something) fellas who have those, but i don't know really.

Sometimes, necromancers can be found with hearts. Also, Azura's quest have you fighting Daedra at the close end of it so you can find a couple there
