New Compooter
I need advice D:

I'm thinking about purchasing a new PC for thanksgiving to replace my stone-age laptop, but I'm not sure what the best place to look is.

I need a fast PC, but doesn't have to be absolute top of the line.
With design and gaming capabilities. Basically as long as it runs toribash with shaders without problems it's good to go.
I'm not exactly the most financially stable person right now, but my current one is barely working.

I imagine some of you bought PCs recently and did some research on your own.
I have heard numerous times that Dells suck in the long run. Alienware seems good, but the price tag isn't too friendly.

So yeah, any advice is welcome.

If you have the skills to build your own computer, take a look around Newegg.com
Most of the parts they offer are of good quality and are reasonably priced.

If you aren't as savvy as you'd like to be (to build your own), I would recommend looking around some tech websites for better recommendations. I've never purchased from a company (always build my own), so I couldn't help you there.

Good luck.

How much are you looking to spend?

And building a computer isnt hard at all. I built my first one a few months ago while having little to no experience before that. Its much cheaper afaik ;p

Errr....I'm looking to spend in the neighborhood of $600-1500, it depends...
And yes I live in US for 5 years now.
heh, if you're willing to spend up to $1500, you'll be fiiine.

I built my monstro rig for about $1500 Canadian. I'll dig up my bill and give you the specifics.

Intel Q6600 - $239.99 (overpayed)
BFG nVidia 9800GTX+ 512mb - $269.99 (couldve gotten it cheaper)
4GB Patriot Viper DDR2 800Mhz RAM - $124.99
Asus P5N-E SLI Mobo - $149.99 (cheaped out on this one, but overpayed regardless)
Thermaltake Centurion Case - $89.00 (eew!)
800W somethingsomething purepower PSU (very good PSU) - $100
22'' Monitor, 2000:1 contrast ratio w/ 5ms response - $200
500gb SATA HD - $89.00

Came to a grand total after tax of $1,426.02
I did pay alot more than I had to, after looking at this, but it's an amaazing computer. I can aaalllmoosstt max out Crysis at 1680x1050 resolution and get 30FPS+ at all times. Far Cry 2 runs even better. Everything else I've played I've been able to max out at max resolution with 60+ fps. Definitely worth it.

That SUX! It's not gamer's PC.

I suggest:
GeForce GTX 280 1GB 512-bit ~400$
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz 6MB Cache ~ 190$
haha, yeah right dude.. Although a high-end dual core processor will run marginally better than my Q6600 in most games, that really doesn't mean shit. No game, not even Crysis or Far Cry 2, can utilize 100% of two (or really even one) of my processing cores.. and I'm running at totally stock settings.

As it stands right now, this thing runs SUPER COOL.. sub 40 degree temperatures under stress. Prime95 doesn't even raise it much higher than that, and I have stock cooling. I could EASILY get it up past 3GHz without breaking a sweat.

Not only that, but in a few years, my Q6600 will outperform that E8500 as games start to take advantage of quad-core processors. I don't care what anyone says but my ~12GHz of usable processing power will beat the crap out of your ~6.3.

I'm happy with what I've got. xD

and as far as I can see, my 9800GTX was the best I could get for the price.
