They both also had successful solo careers though.

No such thing as solo, unless you play all the instruments, and sing yourself.

That's not exactly what I mean. I mean they released records under just their own name and sold them successfully, thus connoting a "solo career".

Bob Marley and Hendrix did both play a lot of stuff solo, without even a backing group. But it stands that you'd hve to have Bob Marley and the Wailers, and the experience or the jimi hendrix experience or Band of Gypsys or Gypsy sun and Rainbows...

I vote Alice in Chains. Their musical quality and diversity between each album and song is unbeatable. Their lyrics are filled with such dark and meaningful depth combined with incredible vocals and harmonizing. This band is seriously a one-of-a-kind group, and they basically had their own genre of rock/grunge. They make the most beautiful rock music known to man...

IMO DAMMIT.

I vote for Blondie or Hellhammer.
