An Open Letter About Double-Posting
Dear Toribash Forums Users and Administration,
The community stance on users making a double-post (which will herein be referred to as "DP") is entirely too strict. Not being able to DP can cause a thread asking a question to slip by unnoticed if no one else posts in the thread other than the thread maker. Preventing DPs also tends to leave some members uninformed if they read a user's post before they edit the post in order to avoid DPing. Finally, the negative comments made on DPing are generally more of an eyesore than the double posts themselves.
Here are the only situations where I feel that DPs are bad:
- Making a second post within ~2-4 minutes of the first post.
- Making a second post that does not introduce any new information to the thread. Comments like "Wait, I didn't read that right" or "Yeah, you're right" as a second post should be edited into the first post.
Here are the situations where I feel that DPs should be allowed:
- When you introduce new information to a thread after some time has elapsed from your first post. There's a good chance people have already read your post, and won't go read it again. If you want these people to notice that you are trying to say something else important, you should make another post.
- To bump a thread that still requires discussion, that has had no activity in the last 24 hours or so. This includes threads that have questions unanswered and other specific examples, but NOT opinion-based threads (ex: "What do you think of this replay" should NOT be bumped with a DP).
- When you are an admin or mod. For example, if the admin makes a post, then a user makes a post, then the admin deletes the post, should the admin decide to make a post explaining why the user's post was deleted, it should not be looked down on as a DP.
Which is another thing. Deleted posts can make it look like someone DPed. Just because someone's name shows up twice in a row doesn't mean they DPed.
So in short, I think you should:
- DP when you introduce new information to a thread
- DP to bump a thread that is unresolved and has had no activity in the last 24 hours
- NOT DP if you made the first post in the last 5 or less minutes
- NOT DP if you are only looking for attention
- NOT DP to make insignificant comments
- NOT make posts complaining about DPs
Sincerely,
volt
