Xbox is notorious for it's reputation of rrod. So if you get one it is very recommended that you get it with the warranty. I think it started to come with one for like 2 years because of all the problems users were having, but I don't know if it still does.

The only thing different between a vertical xbox and a horizontal one is greater surface area, which MIGHT help with cooling just a little bit (as I understand it, rrod is caused by excess heat deforming the components.) Other than that, ventilation and cooling b/w the two are identical
