We all love FPS gender. Call Of Duty and Battlefield are the most famous franchises nowadays. But Blacklight: Retribution is a franchise that wants to give this experience for FREE.
Blacklight: Retribution is a FPS game, focused on multiplayer. It takes place into a chaotic future, where everything is abandoned and falling on pieces. The game uses the Unreal Engine 3, and you already know what this engine can do. On medium, the game is not a deception, although some textures look terrible. But when maxed out with DirectX 11, it doesn't look like a completely free game. Reflexes seems great, motion blur works fine and the textures are nice. But it's still a free game, so don't wait Battlefield 3 graphics.
The gametypes are like the other games. Traditional Team Deathmatch and Deathmatch, Capture The Flag, King Of The Hill and Domination. But there is two more new modes. The Netwar, a variation of Domination where you cannot instantanely hack a node(point), you need to hold it for a certain time and go back from time to time so you can maintain your node. Also, there is a single flag that can be carried by any team. By deploying the flag in your nodes, you rack up some extra points. The other mode is the Siege. The attacking team must escort the Scorpion Tank to the truck, by hacking control panels. On the other hand, the defending team must destroy at all costs the Scorpion tank , until the round ends, because the Scorpion tank ressurects.
This game also features customization. You can buy a hero(a pre-made character with a pre-made weapon), or create your own character by selecting his/hers armor, gear and weapons. You can use light armor so you can run faster, or use stronger, but heavy, armor. You can also use an armor which gives you more slots for carrying gear. By the way, in this game, you have two types of gear: the Tactical Gear which you can carry only one and it features resurrection of dead alies without respawning, mobile cover, cloak, etc. And the normal gear, grenade, HE grenades, EMP grenades(that slows and lock the target’s weapons), Hack grenades( I don’t remember their names, but they hack your character. It looks like a flash grenade), knife, etc. In my opinion, for a free game, that’s a lot of customization. The weapon customization is the same: you can buy a pre-made, or buy parts that can be equipped more than once. You can even customize a pendant! And the pendants give you a bonus! And everything for free!
The gameplay is exciting. You will find the same commands: run, crouch, jump, fire, scope in, weapon melee, knife melee, etc. But there is a feature which is the most important feature in Blacklight. The HRV. The Hiper-Reality Vision is a gear that every character have. When enabled, you can check all the enemy mines, all the recharge points, where are the enemies and other strategic points. But, there are some problems. You cannot shoot, it is for a limited time and it takes time for enabling and disabling, so you need to use it carefully.
When in-game, the game also, doesn’t disappoint. The aim works correctly, each command works well. The bullet sounds are satisfying. A experienced player can use the bullets for knowing where is the action, and the game gives a satisfying 3D sound. However, the game lacks intense music when the match is near the end. The in-game beats aren’t the best I’ve ever heard. But the lobby music is awesome. Speaking of commands now, I miss the prowl stance. I’m not a sniper, but I’m sure that snipers miss the prowling stance. The matches are intense and you can be hit from anywhere, thanks to the cloak. Also, by killing players, assisting your teammates and hacking nodes, you get Combat Points. You can spend them in Depots. What is available in depots is, also, customizable. You can buy some health kit(that must be used at the time of the purchase), ammo, fire thrower, RPG, and even a Hardsuit( A big mecha robot with a minigun and a one-shot kill weapon called the Railgun.). With the Hardsuit everything looks fine right? No. The Hardsuit is slow and has a weak spot(all the vehicles that are too powerful have one). So, even if someone deploys a Hardsuit, your team also have a chance. And counting that all the maps of this game are inapropriated for camping, spawnkilling, or hacking(game uses Punkbuster), this game completely RULES beyond all the other Free To Play games.
Final Rank
9.5/10(for a free game)
8.2/10 ( if you consider the paid ones)
