Any suggestions for how I should do the trails?

Nice, I've also had a set like that in the past, but I made it with MSpaint and it looked much worse.

I'd suggest making the trails just a rainbow, all colours next to each other, instead of above each other like you have on that picture.
But the trails shouldn't be too big, it's damn annoying.
