not looking for any sort of philosophical christian vs. atheist debate blah blah.

I'm quite interested in how and why things have become holy in the past, as well as how deities become an object of worship. Tribal religions are especially interesting to me, as they seem to be more outlandish than mainstream doctrines. Could this be solely based on location/surroundings or are there other drives behind this? Why do you think certain beings/articles are sacred?
