Hydrotoxin's Debate 1: Atheism/Theism and philosophy
As you can see here, I am trying to start a series of weekly debate topics for people to... well, debate about!

This week's topic is one that gets a lot of attention on this forum already, but
is nevertheless an important one-

Atheist/Theist/Philosophy.

In other words- God or no God?

For your first post, simply list your age, region, religious/philosophical beliefs, and a brief explanation of said beliefs. You may also include your favored classical philosopher.

EXAMPLE:
RandomGuy1
Age- 47
Region- Conservativeville, USA
Beliefs- Pentecostal Christian
Why/Explanation of Beliefs- baby jeebus.

I'll start us off, shall I?

Age- 15
Region- Florida (Damn it's hot)
Philosophical/Religious Beliefs- Moral Nihilist
Explanation- Basically stated, Nihilism is the belief that there is no god and no meaning to life. Moral nihilism takes this further by stating that there are no moral absolutes, no good or evil. Society (and religion) has handed these concepts down to us as a tool for keeping society in check, which, as much as I hate to say it, is a necessity for living. When the last man on Earth dies as he stares into the universe, not one thing in that infinite and unknowable vacuum will shed a tear. That's nihilism in a nutshell.
Favorite Philosopher- Plato- he set down the groundwork for the social aspect of fascism, and his famous analogy of the world being a shadow formed the basis of nihilism in a sense (although Plato did not intend this).

Now it's your turn!

Oh, my, god.

Do you have any idea how many of these threads we've had? Religious threads plained out as simple as this is a definitive no-no. I like your threads outline though, so just pick a new topic and I won't close it. Thanks.

EDIT: I'll allow this, simply because.

so how is this atheism/ theism? isn't more a discussion of politics?
VERY IMPORTANT: THIS ACCOUNT IS NO LONGER IN USE. IF YOU WANT TO CONTACT ME THEN PM ONAMIST.
Dalir doesn't want a religious thread and I couldn't change the title, but I think he just OK'D it with his last edit, so I'm fixing it.

You've missed around a billion of similar topics we've had.
I'll see how this turns out, of course....but i have a bad feeling about it.
Besides, it seems you are equally interested in philosophical position, yet your title is just "atheism/theism". Some people know whether they are theists or not, but have no clue about philosophy. I might edit it. Also edit "philosophical" in front of beliefs, because that's what you''re asking. There are many different kinds of beliefs.

Age: 21
Region: Maryland
Beliefs: Let's see...my foot doesn't quite fit any "shoe" perfectly. I always don't agree with at least one small element of philosophical position. Anyway, i am a determinist, and moral relativist. I think you can infer a lot of my other views just from that.
Explanation: My views generally border on nihilism, but not quite. I agree that there is no intrinsic value or meaning to life, apart what we put on it. That said, i do believe we can make real change in totality of existence, given enough time. I also don't think there can possibly be a universal moral standard, however i think we ought to adhere to the "next best thing" - one which promotes the well-being of civilization. Different people may have slightly different ideas of what that might be, and that's ok.
Needless to say, i don't believe in god (or at least people's ideas of what that might be).

Yeah, as soon as I posted the topic I realized the whole Atheism/Theism thing was overdone, but by then it was too late. Next week's topic will be less beaten-to-death than this one. Apologies.

Name: Roger
Age- 18
Region- Wisconsin, USA
Beliefs- Feelin' fine.
Why/Explanation of Beliefs- I don't really know why people choose to believe what they do. A lot of it is tradition. I don't really have an opinion on gods, so call me an atheist. I don't really have an opinion on the afterlife, or spirits, because nobody has any proof. I'm not going to believe something unless I can understand it. If someone says it's unable to be understood, then I'm hearing that's it's pretty unlikely. And with the variety of religions in the world all with different social and moral customs, who is to say which is correct? If someone can give me proof for their theism, I'd gladly read it.
Regarding morality, I adhere to a general moral standard of respecting everyone around me unless they disrespect me. It seems to help my standard of living to be in harmony with those around me. The law is in general accord with that, as are the people around me.
Favorite Philosopher: Friedrich Nietzsche

Age- Footside
Region- Massachusetts, USA
Beliefs- Catholic Chrisitian
Why/Explanation of Beliefs- It's the way I was brought up. No, that doesn't mean I'm not a strong believer. I am a strong beleiver in Catholicism. Why? Because it's just the way the world was explained to me and by nature, it's the way I believe because of that. Feel free to attack my religion (I know Odlov will have no problem with that) but it won't change my mind. The only way I will ever change if a rational scientific explanation that is valid comes up. But that's not likely to happen anytime soon.

Age: 16
Region: Iowa
Beliefs: Pagan
Explanation: Initially grew up as a Christian, but became a nihilist after a long bit of depression. At a summmer camp, had a moment of extreme depression and went outside. It was night time and I was wandering around aimlessly when I just stopped in a clearing and looked up at the sky. This was in a rural location, so the stars were really clear in the sky. I stood there for quite a while apparently, because somebody was sent to look for me. However, in that time I came to feel more at peace with myself. I considered the possibility of a deity or spirit residing in natural, isolated locations and it felt right to me. So wherever my family moved, or whatever school I was transfered to, I always tried to find one isolated area with no development of infrastructure and basically stake it out as a sort of meditation area. In these locations I could wait hours at a time without a care in the world.
