Elitists, Fags and Corruption (Let's get serious.)
The following rant contains larger amounts of seriousness than usual, and thus less amounts of funny. Serious issues, etc.

Soooo, I was in Austria for a week in connection with my studies, learning all-mountain skiing, a discipline of sports that I couldn't possibly be less educated in if I was born on a snowless, very flat island in the middle of the Pacific. I came close to pissing my pants on several occasions while taking the lift up for my first ride, and I'm pretty sure I spent the first entire day plowing the shit out of the slopes in fear of speed biting my ass and making me blindside the nearest snowboarder (which I managed to do anyways).

In any case, I mastered the art of rocketing down an icy hill on two glass-fibre planks pretty fast , and after the second day I'd even taught myself how to steer and brake. Suddenly I was the king of the mountain, carving, skidding and jumping my way down what allegedly was the Atomic test-track. It would have been the experience of a lifetime, had it not been for ten thousand other morons being in the way. Believe me when I say that when you're racing down a steep hill in 50 mph, the old man and his wife slowly cruising down in front of you suddenly become A BIG FUCKING NUISANCE! And then there's the noobs, oh, the noobs! You can't tell when they are gonna turn left or right, hell they probably don't know themselves, so it's pretty fucking hard to dodge them when they're wavering around the slope like stoned jellyfishes.

This was pretty much my exact thoughts one day, and they were followed by the sudden realization that, hey, this could've been me during my first days. They're just a couple of steps behind. Why should I be acting condescending towards them? That's just a major act of hypocrisy.

Believe it or not, but I'm actually going somewhere with this in regards to the community. I'm speaking to all you elitists, all you oldfag swine that seem to think that just because you've been here for a few more months than the other guy, you have the right to treat them like garbage. Your time here doesn't count for shit. I have met several people that have been around for only days that act better than the dickheads that have been around for years. Bad influence through time? Possibly.

Please. Don't.

It's a breeze to act like a big man on the internet, and it's surprisingly effective, even if smart people easily spot the insecurity in your tough-guy facade. Though, people aren't doing it because it's easy to do, they genuinely feel that they gain something out of it. In most cases we're talking about purebred ego-inflation. If you can't get respect through actually working for it, why not try the fear-method? Respect through fear is simple, quick and...well, very, very flawed.

Because what the majority here seems to miss by a mile is the fact that fear is not respect. Ah, sure, people still pretty much follow your words, but it will come back to haunt you eventually. Fall from grace with nobody to support you? Check, because most people hate your guts anyways so they're not gonna lift a finger to help you.

To avoid said scenario, some, slightly more intellectual people (that are still too lazy to conduct anything else but the fear-method) suck up to the people worth sucking up to. With powerful friends, you can do pretty much whatever you want to around here. There are few things I hate more than people being two-faced whenever it suits their cause, treating superiors and otherwise people they deem to be worth knowing with respect, and disrespecting everyone else in order to feed their own, twisted egos.

You're a truly great person when you manage to treat everyone with equality. Try putting yourself in different situations. For instance: A community member has done something that most other members would deem offensive. This is your best friend in Toribash. How do you handle it? How would you handle it if it was, say, a guy that you've had a few quarrels with?

Bottom line: Stop. Being. Bigger. Because you're not. You're making a fool out of yourself. People hate you for it. If only we could learn from the newbs and start being happy and nice instead of letting our alpha-instincts take over, this community and, particularly it's IRC-network, would be a better place.

And remember: You get what you give.

Sincerely,
~CMon
Very true. I remember back when I first joined, which was quite a while ago, that people were a lot nicer to new players, and for that matter to everyone else. Nowadays it seems that unless you already have an established reputation most players try their hardest to ignore you, or if they can't do that then they'll try to prove just how much better they are. It just seems to be the way things are nowadays. Doesn't make it any better of course.
VERY IMPORTANT: THIS ACCOUNT IS NO LONGER IN USE. IF YOU WANT TO CONTACT ME THEN PM ONAMIST.
Just like Kitfox. He's been here a long time, but he still manage to ABOOZ HIS POURS
jk.

I hate people like that. just check out the bully thread, and look for people who tell you how they're gonna fight a bully. It's really dumb and they make themselves look like lay-hoo-zay-hers
I love you
CMon is just jealous that I joined before him lololololololol

On a serious note, I think hate towards 'newbs' or new people is justified in some cases; when Toribash suddenly sprang into relative popularity around 3.0, when it became free, there was a flood of new users coming in. Sadly, most of them seemed to irk everyone else, and it seems like a lot of people who joined after them followed their example.

This is just a generalization and it shouldn't ever justify anything in an argument, eg "I KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT BECAUSE I'VE BEEN HERE LONGER. For the most part, the people who joined two or three years ago who are still active today are on good terms with people and generally liked; it's not like there weren't idiots back in "THE OLD SKOOL DAYS", it's just that most of them either shaped up or became inactive.

This works on the flip-side, too; there are some new people who join that are pretty intelligent, not just relative to the hordes of beggars and 9 year-olds that join alongside them but also to the whole community.

tl;dr: Although a certain join date doesn't really prove that you're cool/great/whatever, most people who have been around for a while are likable and smart, and this is rarer with newer members.
How to complain in style: GG, Mahulk.
You're very right, especially about that last comment about the IRC.

Personally, I have friends ranging through the whole spectrum from new guys or people who don't speak english too well to some people in high places.

Something I want to add, most people who speak English as a second language and don't speak it too well, are generally less popular on the forums because people automatically dismiss them. Just for an example, the co leader of my clan, EeE33, doesn't speak great english, but he's a great guy, very mature, and he's a loyal clan member.

To be honest, when I was first starting I was alot nicer, I'm still pretty nice. Substantially nicer than alot of other people I know. But I'm not so much any more in public. I've adapted to the ways to start gaining popularity from the people who matter, and disregarding what the decent and nice people think of me. Although not intentional, it has happened.

It's nice to see someone in your position who has a decently substantial influence over some of the elitist people you're talking about to post a thread like this. And that picture is pretty close to reality, meaning that alot of the elitist people have a very different social life and personality away from the internet in real life.

tl;dr: Although a certain join date doesn't really prove that you're cool/great/whatever, most people who have been around for a while are likable and smart, and this is rarer with newer members.

This is also true. A lot of the people who are still around from early 2008 or 2007 or maybe even 2006 are alot of the time decent people. It might have something to do with dedication or something that filters out the dislikable people through time.

I'm just gonna list some old schoolers who are really decent poeple:

steve
SlipAnc
CMon
hanz0
Delaid
Gman
avwave
Hamster
Blam

Notice that most of the Admins are nice. You can get power/popularity with elitist attitude up to a point.

And more to come when I remember them.

I agree... back when i joined ppl were mean. what makes me angry is when a brown belt, or even a black belt, does something like a noobclap. It seems downright wrong.

I try to be nice to new players (white belts, yellow belts) but when someone does something that is known to be newby, and is a good belt, it just is infuriating.
But not everyone is a jerk. a black-belt (who i sadly have forgotten the name of) was rlly nice when i got in... taught me not to noobclap, or shovel. There should be more people like that.

After reading this I felt like a cock. I can be a real asshat to people I don't know on the forum, and just a cunt in general. I guess it's cause I feel bigger for being around a tad longer. I hope my sins are forgiven, as I gave a less fortunate member a Vampire Relax just before...

Nice thread, Cmon. I hope it changes some peoples views as it did mine.
In all honesty I'm only a total dick on the internet because my actual life is a pile of shit and I need some entertainment and ego-inflation before I die.

oh, okay. That completely justifies your actions. I used to think you were a tool, but that's cool.
I love you
