I believe you're wrong. Animals do indeed protect their best interest in staying alive. Not only themselves, but also the ones around them. Look at dogs for example. If you have a dog he will protect you if someone adopts an aggressive stance towards you. They establish social links with you and other people.
Its not just about reproduction. Animals like comfort, like adventure, and, depending on the species and/or individual, they usually don't like stressful atmospheres. Of course they make decisions in their own interest!
About getting upset and killing themselves... I've seen how elephants get away from the herd, intentionally, to die. There's also many animals that literally give up by not eating, drinking and so on. But of course, most of them do this only when they're sick.
