If anything Skyrim is Oblivion and Fallouts retard baby, but still better than the two and what does that say?
Well, the combat is reasonably similar, but I agree with you for the most part. I think they tried to simplify the game even further from Oblivion to make it more accessible for new players. For instance, the class system and placement of skill points is gone, replaced with perks and the 3 skill rocks outside the starting area.
I like how you have to level all the different skills from scratch in Skyrim.
The only problem I have is that they're dumbing it down a bit. If you look back at Morrowind, the game was a complex shitstorm of number crunching to determine what does what and whether something should hit or miss was based on numbers and collision detection rather than just collision detection on its own. Shields blocked when they felt like it. Insanely boosted athletics would have you running at 100mph and boosted to oblivion acrobatics would have you soaring over cities with a single bound.
Oblivion went more action oriented, with hits being determined by collision detection and then calculating the numbers. A few of the skills were merged into others to make it a bit simpler for people to play, but the whole class, vital stats and skill placement was still there. Athletics and acrobatics weren't quite as crazy in this one, but high acrobatics could result in building hopping with a little buffing beforehand.
Now with Skyrim, they removed the class system, vital stats and skill placement all together, instead relying on the player to level up every skill from scratch by using it, allowing each player to become whatever they wanted. Combat is still collision based followed by number crunching for damage. And there is no longer any acrobatics or athletics, meaning that every person runs at the same speed and jumps to the same heights. Which isn't anywhere near as fun.
