Just as tool said, when we generalize, when do we stop. Why does something have to conform to a general theory or list to be considered music. Who actually even created those guidelines. If you ask any musician "What is the definition of music," you will get a different answer each time. The music theory really just generalizes. It is based off of what music was in the past. Just because newer "music" does not fit the criteria for older music does not mean it is not music. If the "music theory" was always followed, then no new genre of music would ever be created.

Music is still an art, try making a dubstep song, or any of the modern music you hear today. Although it is not appealing, it is an art and is still considered music.

That's wrong. Music has always followed music theory, because they are one in the same thing. when something does not follow the theory, then it ceases to be music. Unless you can find a way to make music without rythme, tempo, and all the other things needed to make music, then you're just making noise. When I was a little kid, I hit the pans in my house together like I was clashing symbols, I wasn't making music, I was just annoying the shit out of my parents.

New music has rhythm and tempo. There is no debate here. New music is crap, everyone knows it, but it is still music. It does follow the theory.

Actually, that was my original point. Thanks for finally seeing it my way. Except rap. Still not music at its core values.

With rap, it really depends. There are so many different artist. 10% of the rappers are shit. The mainstream ones you hear on the radio everyday truly don't deserve the money and respect they get. It is the underplayed and less known artist that are very good. Great and meaningful lyrics, with great beats.

I have no problems with rap. I have a problem with it being called music. It is not. Unless you dive into the category called Rap Music, you're not listening to music if you're listening to rap.

Er, you're getting hostile towards music theory there. And no, It does not. Rhythm and Poetry does not conform to music theory at it's base function. Rap Music does, but not Rap.

I'll bump that, adding on that mainstream rap from 2000+ has been terrible, but of it some before that was pretty good.
