512's are easier to make. But It doesn't show as great as 128x128 (please correct if i'm wrong)

512 has more detail and looks better in every case, you should be making 512x512 textures unless your client asks for something smaller because they can't afford the 512 texture, i'll give you guys ONE more demonstration today [edit post in a few moments with pics]

one I made before, this has both a texture and bump mapping, the gears have higher resolutions at the top, and lower at the bottom.



a couple of images displaying the detail to be found in higher resolution, left = low res, right = high res, up = no bump, down = bump mapping


This is actually a repeated 6 pixel wide pattern, the pattern is individually applied at each resolution, so it shows the x4 level of detail in the horizontal in 512x512, which by extension with the vertical is x16 detail.

you have it backwards. 512 is harder, since there are more pixels to work with, but it also looks better than 128x128 providing that the tori is using 512x512, instead of scaling it down.

so in other words, i can get a free 512x512 head tex by putting it in a custom folder, even though i'll be the only one who can see it?

or do i still have to buy the head tex?

That is correct suicideDo, if you buy the 512x512 head texture this allows everyone else to see it, otherwise you can simply put the file in the custom folder, make a new folder with your name, then the head.tga file in that folder.

I think this topic needs to be locked, everything to be said has been, and all questions have been answered, I'm thinking of writing a full consolidation on the episode and a toribash FAQ for textures.

normanfahs: this thread doesn't cover how to make textures, but to make them simply use a program like photoshop or GIMP, (GIMP is free) and draw the texture in 128x128, 256x256 or 512x512 resolution, then make sure you have the toribash head texture item in the shop, and use the upload button to upload your texture.

Anyone who's interested in the consolidation and FAQ just PM me, I plan on giving it to hanz0 for approval. ~(however I don't even know if he's the right guy to give it too :P)
if i make 128x128 heads,
i create them first in 512x512 pixels.
then i make the canvas size 128.
