He didn't mean that it was void,if you read carefully he was taking as a reference the character from the movie dark void,so go sue them for not making it void.
I don't really like it. The picture is way too messy. The linework of the head looks very good, but the shading is too flat.

will probably need more softer shading, and you could also try to make the red glow blue like those evil dudes have. And i think the glow are shiz is going far too much to the top.

Messiness of the preview was intentional. :)
I also tend to have a relatively minimalist shading style, but I'll certainly keep your comments in mind.

I like the yellow/orange/red glow, personally. I'll try a blue out, though.
I'm not sure what you mean by that last sentence - the glow goes too high?

If you like minimalistic shading style, maybe you could try to add small gradient over the head. Also very little single-coloured highlights would help it pop out.

But that's very clean style indeed.
