Actually both Avast and AVG suck when it comes to malware/adware/spyware/rogue software and other lesser but still malicious software that doesn't fit under the virus/worm category.
Spybot, Malwarebytes and Combofix are specially designed to detect and remove such nasties, and - as of today - they will go deeper and will be more effective at that job than any other antivirus, yes, even paid Internet Security suites such as Norton Internet Security 2010 or Kaspersky Internet Security 2010.
A lot of the removing process of infections used by antivirus are very rudimentary, they might even leave registry keys behind... They focus too much on files... Spybot, Malwarebytes and Combofix can effectively remove both files and registry keys accordingly to the detected threats, much more efficient and do a better job.
