I tend to not eat plastic but this really isn't an album made to please the masses, so I really don't see how this is cheap or gimmicky. If he didn't want to make something like that then he wouldn't. This was supposed to be an experiment, something new. Smashing middle-eastern music, rap, and Gorillaz influences and making it sound good probably isn't the easiest thing to do. If Dave wanted to make the same stuff he would have, but that's pointless.
It wasn't supposed to even have any singles released for the radio. I really don't think "Stylo" should have been the first single anyway, it only is because it was the first song to get leaked so they thought ok let's go with that.

Or "Plastic Beach" could be a metaphor for paradise, but you could be just as right. I'm actually listening to Gorillaz right now, and I find their new album fine. They failed miserably trying to keep up with the hype, although the have a few good songs where Damon Albarn is actually singing, and had some decent features such as Little Dragon. In my opinion, White Flag could've been a decent song, but the singers are horrible twits with no taste, which brings up, did Damon Albarn actually think it was good enough for the album? Regardless, Gorillaz obviously didn't keep up with the hype, and they didn't meet the expectations set by their previous albums. Pirate Jet <3

I think each album is unique in its own way. Just compare G-Sides to Demon Days. They're both great, but totally different. I like this new side of the Gorillaz, and I'm willing to let them evolve.

I didn't like the album too much when I got it, but the more I listen to it the more I like it.
But that's usually what happens when I get a new album.

Clearly the majority of you dont know the Gorillaz very well or much about the music industry. first up the Gorillaz have never had a consistant style. you cant say that "oh they changed revert to old self." if you have only heard their singles. 1999-2000 was Unique. and the majority of the album sounds NOTHING like Demon Days with the exception of Clint Eastwood. then Demon Days came along... and again was unique... not sounding anything like the previous album. and now you have plastic beach.. once again unique... Modius is right in that its experimental and does not catter for the masses because if you know anything about music you would know that retro died out about 20 years ago. which is the base sound for Plastic Beach. Listen to Stylo, Listen to Empire Ants, the Synthlines are 80's. My educated guess would be that he drew his influences from the likes of Yazoo, and Joy Devision. Listen to I Just Cant Get Enough - By Depeche Mode... its all there. Im all for personal opinion. however uneducated opinion drives me mad.

This album is more hip-hop pop-ish then their old stuff. They are always quite different from what they were in their previous albums.

I pretty much only like the last 6 tracks. Since I don't really like rap that much. (I do like superfast jellyfish though).
Listen to the first album, many of the songs have a more old school styled hip hop element. this is definatly more retro then anything else... Retro synth and bass lines are the base sounds of this album.
