How exactly is this supposed to be viewed as critical of 9/11 attacks?
This is clearly a mockery.
Totally legal, of course, but let's call things what they are. It's a slap in the face, and it's duly noted.

I think a large majority of Americans will be shocked at the difference between the medias portrayal of islam and the truth behind islam.

I don't expect the average citizen to notice how similar Christianity and Islam are, however.

I don't think it's a slap in the face at all. Muslims have nothing to do with the attacks. What you're essentially saying is that all Socialists are bad because Hitler killed a lot of jews. Or communism is bad because of Soviet Russia, etc, when in fact they are not true representations of either socialism, communism and indeed the muslim faith.

The truth about a subject tends not to matter to people after some planes crash into some buildings and some people die. This will anger people regardless of their knowledge on the subject.
The question is whether they will get angry enough to do something about it.

Nowhere in my post did i imply that all Muslims are bad people or that Islam is inherently worse than other religions (even if i think a case could be made for the latter).
The point is that this stunt is tasteless, as would erecting a monument to Fascism in a Jewish community be, especially if it was put there only 10 years after WW2. I can't conceive of any purpose for mosques being there other than provocation.

That's not even close to being similar. Fascism is not a good thing. Islam is fine.

I'm just reading between the lines.

Ok, let me give a more accurate analogy:

A minority group of American residents in Vietnam build a giant monument to USA 10 years after the war. A monument which glorifies those responsible for burning and killing the relatives of people who now have to behold it every day.

OF COURSE not all Americans supported the war. However, those who did aren't magically excluded from being Americans - and are still represented by that monument. They are reminded of by that monument. "No True Scotsman" fallacy needs to be taught in all schools.

Again - legality isn't an issue here.
What i am questioning is their true motives. The spot they picked couldn't be a coincidence. If you demand sensitivity - give sensitivity.

I bet the Islamist terrorists responsible for attacks on the West are creaming their pants in ecstasy now.

If it was allegedly a hardcore Christian who flew a plane in the towers, that would likely change.

Christians have done plenty more shit than just that.
