If the companies weren't going so batshit insane over it (draconian DRM, bullshit claims of losing billions in profit) it would probably work out better for them. Like how EA released Spore with a maximum limit of installs, and in protest a lot of people pirated it (and got more freedom than those that didn't).
I like your points ginger.
Music is an easy one to shoot down (cos that's how I roll). CD's are cheaper these days, 'when I was a lad' they were £20+ a throw, now they're less than half that. Not to mention music can normally be bought cheaper via an online service.
I don't buy into the pirating to try thing at all for music - you can listen to pretty much anything online without having to break any laws. /me points at Youtube
Urgh new DRM, yeah that shit's fucking horrid. Then again Spore was pretty pap, and The Sims 3... Yeah nuff said with that.
It's a bit of a double edged sword, they add that crap because their stuff gets pirated and in turn that makes people pirate it. :| TBH regression is the best thing that can happen to the games industry. Money grabbing wanks like Activision & EA need to fuck off & prices need to drop back to 90's levels.
And no - you can't provoke this with piracy, that's one of the things fuelling the price rise (even if they talk shit & use it as an excuse) - just stop buying their 2nd rate crap. Hell we might actually get some good games out of it instead of *yawn* COD 9870250987243609862640986246: Exactly The Same But Different Edition.
Oh, and the same applies to games & applications etc as I stated about music - they have trials, demos or whatever. You get the chance to see if it's worth buying. And if you're a spotty teen living with their parents you don't need Photoshop to draw a few pictures. TVM for pirating the shit outa it & getting the price bumped for people who used it legit. >_>
