It is certainly for fun than mc. There's actually motivation to improve your items. Building is a bit more limited than mc ( obviously, it's 2-D ) but it's still very fun to build. I've been at the end-game items for 2 weeks after i got the game and I still love it.
Here's a comparison.
Minecraft gets and update after 2 months = 3 new items/blocks
terraria gets an update after a week 1/2 = 50-60+ items.
