In that small difference between a dinosaur/chicken thing and a legit chicken there had to be an egg to give birth to the chicken. You don't evolve as you grow up. The mutation has to be contained in the next offspring.
The chicken, its impossible to be the egg i mean think about it. A chicken would come out of an egg from whatever evolved before the chicken and then it would lay the first chicken egg.
