Not all of them, for the newer games 550ti, and 560ti are better ones, of course the optimal vid cards are 570-580-590, they can run everything.
And on the Ati side, they are 6950-6970-and 6990.
But yeah, an Nvidia 550-560ti is good enough.

For example, I have a laptop which meets all the recommended requirements for Battlefield 3 except for the graphics card which only meets the minimum requirements. The game plays at a decent framerate on medium-low video settings.
Just for explanation: The perfomance of the GPU(aka processor on the videocard, though it has a different architecture to an actual processor) and CPU(processor on the motherboard) should be on the same level, or maybe even the cpu should be a bit faster, as it has to keep the videocard busy, the cpu gives the tasks to the gpu, and it also has to calculate a lot of other stuff.
tl;dr: If you want a good video card, you will need a good processor next to it to fully use it, and vice versa.
