It is well known that excess consumption of sugar is bad for you. In addition sugar contributes little nutrition, glucose etc is not a necessary nutrient. However, asking for citations is your right, so here we go, massed citations;

Firstly to support the assertion that soda contains sugar;
http://productnutrition.thecoca-cola...ucts/coca-cola
22% of your RDI, >10% of the drink is sugar.
An article from WebMD about the health impacts;
http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/s...-risks-debated
> Diet and regular sodas have both been linked to obesity, kidney damage, and certain cancers. Regular soft drinks have been linked to elevated blood pressure.
Additionally high sugar intake is linked to diabetes and obesity;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar#Health_effects
As well as tooth decay, and addiction;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_addiction
Health impacts of sugary soda has been well studied, links between obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease risks are well known
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2862465/
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2963518/
Additionally the leading cause of obesity in the USA is soda;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obesity#Diet
"he primary sources of these extra carbohydrates are sweetened beverages, which now account for almost 25 percent of daily food energy in young adults in America,[76] and potato chips.[77] Consumption of sweetened drinks is believed to be contributing to the rising rates of obesity.[78][79]"

As far as modern science is concerned, soda is one of the worst things people are consuming.

Are you suggesting we get calories exclusively from protein and fat?

Excess sugar is bad for you. No one contests this. Excess anything is bad for you. Your body is not evolutionarily prepared to deal with it. However, sugar itself in moderate quantities is healthy, even necessary, as is fat.

Aye.
In my opinion the media is in fact demonizing the consumption of anything labeled as a 'snack' and or 'junk' food. The only people that are in fact talking for them are the excess heath addicts, the pro-veggie's and all of the dietary junks. These people see only red and don't see what's good about these food/drinks. But, I'm not contradicting the fact that they are, in high quantities, harmful and or bad for your health. They cause, as probably previously stated, obesity, stroke, bad teeth and many other things. This is all the media sees. Luckily, BoredPayne has already reasoned, that all of these non-artificial additives within these 'devil items' as proclaimed, are needed for a healthy lifestyle. So, really this topic can't be sided when the fact of the matter is to be neutral and just use all of these junk/snack food items at a proper rate of consumption.

Now, on a side note. I really don't think that the media should revamp their protocol to stop this junk food attack on the youth of today, but as to show kids things that could improve your health. This, in a sense would make most children and maybe up into the high teens pretty curious as to how new things taste, if they've never had it, and to just try them to better their health. If this could be done, as well as a good mix with the 'Junk Caution' it would be a perfect balance and could save most kids from growing up with heart problems.

BoredPayne said sugar is necessary, he never said junk food was.

Junk food is expensive and not very good for you. There is no legitimate reason to drink candywater and eat junk food. They don't do anything good, and there is no reason to be eating them.

Well except for preference.
If 'candywater' had the exact same taste of plain water. Then those businesses would not have even began.

I like to kill babies because it is my preference.

I guess that is a legitimate choice too right?

Well, you asked for a legitimate reason. So I gave a legitimate answer.
Although I think your example covers more on what is right, rather than why is it right.
The point is, "because I want to" is not a legitimate reason. Anyone who thinks basing choices on pure emotion is logical is a bit silly...
