That's right. When insulting, people are going to say what they want to say regardless of what the implications may be. Besides, if anything the use of the words only desensitizes the value of it. The more times you hear something is gay.. the less you associate it with actual gays. I don't think of it anymore, it's just become second hand to me. Is it right? Probably not but so what? I and everyone else has the right to say what they will.

The same concept applies with "nigger". The word has been so desensitized that it's essentially a greeting between black people. (I'm gonna leave out the whole reverse racism argument because none of the applies to this).

Like Spartan said, people using the phrases are attempting to be politically correct in the first place. What insult is? If they wish to stop insulting all together then that should be their message. And my argument, they shouldn't call upon insults to do it.

To give some explanation..
I know where they're getting at of course. That using "derogatory terms" can influence bad behavior in a similar way. But I just can't help but feel that the people who are starting this "movement" are doing so, just to do so. Like somebody woke up in the morning thinking, "Hey, I want to change the world and stuff. But what's something relevant that people might actually pay attention to?" and just went on with whatever came to mind.

Although I don't think that was how the campaign was started I'd agree that the idea to change the way people show distaste is unneeded. I've never heard anyone complain about it aside from the people on these commercials.

I can understand the "kids need to grow up kinder" argument, and that's still alright with me, sort of. But you can't just have every kid growing up to the prospect that forming an opinion is a bad and punishable thing.
The world doesn't run on rainbows after elementary.

There's nothing wrong with dwelling on the idea of a perfect world in which no one is offended. But the fact of the mater is, it's impossible. No mater what, someone is going to be offended. To quote Penn Jillette, "We're all offended, all the time and we don't have a fucking right not to be offended."

They can try to change what people say but doing so by offending others? Where's the logic in that?

"square" used to be an insult. It's not a counter productive campaign, but it's certainly stupid. Words can and do have multiple meanings, Emma and Julia are not saying that having to be home right after work is literally homosexual.

I like how the woman then says "dumb or stupid", ignoring that 'dumb' refers to someone unable to speak, and stupid is someone with low mental abilities.

I can't imagine this campaign having a positive effect considering it's idiotic and hypocritical tendencies.

Just going to point out there is only a small window when this is an insult. Humans can only really maintain 100 or so relationships at a time. Thus if a gamer has less than 100 games and you say that, then it's an insult, but if they have, for example, 600 games, then obviously it's a compliment.
I think this campaign is stupid honestly, I mean when were the adults that started this last kids... (rough estimate) maybe thirty years ago, forty even?

As much as I myself don't like the terms I understand that it's accepted amoung the children and teenagers of this generation. I mean honestly, when you say phrases like "that was gay" or "that was retarded" do you honestly give it any thought?

No you don't because it's just become common language amoung us. Now when you grow up you watch your tongue because there is more on the line then a possible suspension. (Most times you get a slap on the wrist for such statements). I mean as an adult you get caught saying something like that the brainless masses will think you literally meant the insult of a homosexual or a mentally challenged person. I mean the amount you can lose by just uttering those phrases is outstanding as an adult, so we hold our tongue better then.

But to think adults believe we can do this... HA, don't make me laugh, they will be mad at our ignorance but look at theirs.
But in all reality... I think I might be insane...

Well put. The campaign really is just chalk full hypocrisies that ruin the entire cause.

I laughed. Besides, I find that gamers seem to have a tightly-knit circle of friends.

It's not like if you call someone retarded or gay even in jest you have to automatically think all gay and mentally retarded people are stupid. Though, one should make a distinction between the use of these words and racial slurs. The word, "nigger" has only meant one thing ever since it has come into use.

Uhhh...no. If society collectively reinterprets nigger as just a casual way of saying "I don't like this," it's still racist, it still has the stigma, it still has the potential to hurt and incite violence. Equating homosexuality with dislike is pretty obviously offensive.
The word is inherently homophobic.

ImmortalCow, if stupid was used to abuse those with low mental capacities to the extent faggot is used to abuse homosexuals, not using the word stupid makes sense.

So if nigger was less used then it would be fine to say it?

Wut.

Nope, it seems you don't get it. He doesn't point at how often it's used, but towards who it's used. He says stupid is more okay because it's not referring to the stupid people group (those with mental ilness), but it would not be okay, if it was used towards them.

Nigger is not okay, because it's referring to black people in a negative sense. That's why.
Which implies that using 'fag' as a generic insult should be fine by axiom.

Which seems to be the opposite of what he is arguing. If use is what is important, then the issue would not exist at all.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not the one supporting the campaing here, just that it in theory shouldn't, because it does depict that group of people. "Fag" or "faggot" means homosexual, whereas "stupid" is a negative adjective which you can say about many things and it does not so directly relate to the stupid people group. Therefore, using "stupid" is considerably more proper and less discriminating that using "fag".

Althrough, here I'll go about the campaign itself: I'd say it's probably more or less successful. Go to their website it seems meh-okay and they've got some semi-known people with good reputation to support them and do vids for them like that soccer woman... So I'd say, they may not have failed in this.
Your argument makes sense, and I agree JSnuff. But BoredPayne's does not, he only makes a distinction based on how common it is, not by the meaning.
