Update for this; Someone helped us find a link for a file which apparently fixes this error, I can only suggest trying it.

I found out apparently that the non-steam version crashes if i put it to fullscreen, then relaunch it, but that's not a problem in the steam version.

Are you able to play it now? I would assume if that's your issue a simple reinstall would have worked.
