You could also try TwistedBrush (17.24). It features a full collection of realistic natural brushes and it's pretty easy to use.

Can confirm the excellence of these two. GraphicsGale for pixel art, Krita for pretty much everything else. GIMP is also very solid, although i've found that Krita is marginally better for painting, and GraphicsGale is better for spriting. But, GIMP can do both, and in the end it's really up to personal preference.

Do note though, Krita can be a bit hard to set up, so for starters, GIMP is probably better.
