Updating Uke Bot/Tutorial
Sorry for the big wall of text, but please take your time to read this.

New players join Toribash daily and we want to keep them interested in the game so they won't quit.

When you register a new account you are taken to a tutorial. It explains the game and tells the control, basic things. I'm in love with this game and I always tell my friends to download it and to get familiar with the game. Once they begin playing, they almost immediately lose interest to the game.

I created a new account, just to see what impression Toribash makes to new players. I've noticed the tutorial has changed, but it's not entertaining/informing (based on my friends' reactions to the tutorial and my own).

They do attempt making the tutorial interactive with take pre-done moves and then asking the new player to extend knees, ungrab, etc. I don't think moves like that truly represent the beauty of Toribash.

We can all agree aikido/physics is a big part of Toribash, but they're absent during the tutorial. The tutorial only makes a mere dent in all the things we can do in Toribash, but the new players don't know that, making them lose interest to the game.

The tutorial needs to show them aikido. Show them sweeps, lifts, suplexes, etc. They could even show real life examples during the tutorial(like a clip or something). This will open up a connection between a game and physics that no other game can show. This will interest new players to continue playing the game.

The tutorial can go through how to make tc. Even though there are threads and videos on this, the tutorial needs to show the player or give them easier access to these topics. It does give you a link to the beginner sanctuary, but it never goes beyond that. Showing texture making/item forging to all the artists who join Toribash. The tutorial can go through forums showing the community beyond the in game servers.

They can introduce new players marketing, the events they can attend, buying, selling textures. Their inventory(activating, deactivating). Transferring tc, customizing your profile on forums, clans, orgs, all the good stuff.

I know this is a lot just for one tutorial, so they can organize it into sections. For e.g:

  • Forums
    In-game

The in-game can go into dueling, betting, in-game commands and forums can go into the topics included in the last passage.

Uke Bot

Uke needs to be more engaged with the player, taking the player to servers, showing commands. Engaging Uke with the player, brings a welcoming vibe.

The new players tend to get lost on the multiplayer page and would usually go to a goofy mod that doesn't truly represent Toribash. If there would be a server where Uke is in hotseat and new players can join and try beating uke for practice.

Uke should have a better variety of moves in Challenge Uke and explain the moves while he is executing them.

What do you mean? An user group sounds a bit weird, it will be easier to just keep it within the thread.

I'm kinda good at tk so I'll write some stuff.
I've attached some replays that are important so you might want to download them once you've read to the point where it says "[Replay 1 here] etc"

Kicking Tutorial

Fade from white to uke and tori standing in the Taekkyon mod.

Opening line:
"Hello! Welcome to the toribash kicking tutorial! In this tutorial you'll be shown how to play the two most popular kicking mods! Taekkyon and Erthtkv2."

"This is Taekkyon, this mod focuses on tugging and kicking!"

[Replay 'Taekkyon Example 1']

"Here you can see 2 Taekkyon replays, as you can see they are full of destruction"

[Replay 'Taekkyon Example 2']

Load back to tori and uke standing in Taekkyon.tbm

Uke holds all and contracts pecs

Player can do whatever they want

"Press space when you are ready with your move"

1 Turn progresses

"As you can see, the turn frames in this mod are very low - 10"
"This allows for precise movements, often needed for kicks and blocks."

Tutorial allows player to finish the match, uke doesn't move.

"You will now be shown a very basic counter to a snap kick, a snap kick is a 20 frame kick which can often do alot of damage quickly if not blocked or dodged"

Uke does the moves shown in [Replay 'Taekkyon Block'], player is instructed to do the moves I used, shown like the old tutorial with the glowy joints and shit.

"Good job! Since snap kicks are very common in kicking mods, you will now be shown how to parry snapkicks!"

Uke does moves shown in the [Replay 'Taekkyon Parry']
Tori is instructed to do the moves I used, like in the old tutorial with the blue joints and it not letting you click anything else

"If you grab the knee joint[Highlighted with the bluey glow] while it's being extended in both erthtk and Taekkyon, it will snap off."

"Grabs are important in Taekkyon, They can be used both offensively as seen here [Replay 'Taekkyon Offensive Grabbing']
and defensively, as seen here [Replay 'Defensive Grabbing']"

"Grabs aren't something that can be taught in a tutorial, they're something that comes with practice, singleplayer is good for practicing, but you're best off trying it in multiplayer"

Fade to white

Fade from white to tori and uke standing in the erthtkv2 arena

"This is Erthtkv2.tbm, this mod is very similar to Taekkyon, things you learned about taekkyon are still very true with erthtkv2, although you may have noticed the ring, and you're also able to hit yourself to do damage, like this to yourself, like this.."
[Replay 'Self damage']
"See that? your points just went up because uke hit himself"

Decided to go super in depth to make sure no dev who doesn't know squat about tk goes and makes a tk tutorial based of their knowledge of the mod, which is really minimal/outdated

Probably going to add some more later, just hit a block, the erthtkv2 thing needs expanding.

Good job with that slayaa, but i have noticed taekkyon servers aren't usually filled with people nowadays

Great work, but if you're following my idea it would be nice if it followed the same pattern i'm using. Every mod should have a basic tutorial and a few advanced tutorials.
Just be clear where each tutorial starts and I'm happy.
I'll see if i can script tutorials in a similar manner later on.

it's not a beginner friendly mod and if no one is there to explain it there isn't going to be many new players.

I'll do some reformatting and other things tomorrow or the day after that and thanks.
Well done Lazors and ImaSlayaa, we'll see what other people think about the tutorial

Now for Uke.

Toribash is a sandbox game, it gives players freedom to create. We must allow the player to explore and learn on their own, but the tutorials will still be there to keep them on the right track.

Going more in depth, the Challenge Uke currently up is not very complex. After a while players can predict what Uke will do next. I was wondering if it would be a cool idea to have different stages of Uke. As you move on to the next stage, Uke will be harder to beat.

It would be called "Challenge Mode" and every time you beat Uke you move on to the next level as Uke's skills gradually increase.

The Challenge Mode will keep users interested in the game and gives them a chance to develop techniques against different play styles. Also, they don't need internet to play Challenge Mode. :>

I like the way ImaSlayaa added script to, as I said before it brings welcoming vibe.
Iirc the tutorial files are available in the toribash install folder. I haven't tried but I wonder if it'd be possible to go into them (I'd guess they're lua files with maybe some rpl supplements) and change up the tutorial. If so then feel free to do that. If you make something good it might even be able to be added or adapted to the game. :o (No promises)

I played twinswords for a good few months before I took anything else seriously in Toribash. Perhaps not the best to throw new players alike into more serious mods. Give them the basic physics, but slather on some gore and excitement. That's what all the trailers show us, isn't it? It's going to take a long time to accomplish even basic momentum to decapitate limbs, so give them options.

//Would you like to, A) Learn competitive play, B) Live and let loose, C) Learn 'tori-physics', D) Become a natural born decapitator, E) Walk across a 100 yard tightrope

Very much support this thread's intent.

Starting tutorial: static camera *add key frames to follow fight/anable toricam and look through one of their eyes. // No skip - space, enter, arrow keys, locked keyboard

WASD // still able to interact, space, press limbs

SD, up, down // still able to interact, space, press limbs // inaccurate, vertical transition, not centered around body

Press "C" to hold or relax all of the joints // emphasis on this point, very useful when learning the basics while DQ active in public servers // always

Does not state you can press "V" to change grips from hold>loose>hold

Pulsing indicator/words above "PLAY" button once section of tutorial complete // unclear, add // I just skipped text because this is not a thing.

There is no "BACK" button // add

Mods // "...those shown in green are folders with other mods" // There are no mod folders

Basic Training Tut.

Very good // hold all, grab, shoulders, knees, decapitation, limb highlight

Advanced

Must click on hands, can not proceed through tutorial if pressing "V" // not a problem atm

Fighting Uke

What happened? I am fighting Uke? No one told me.
// announcement, center screen, like tournaments, "UKE VS [USERNAME] - ROUND ONE"
Can alter Uke's moves // no reason to
Cannot see both ghosts // inaccurate ghost, doesn't show what is actually going to happen

End of sequence
To yellow belt server

Moves For Fighting Uke.
I know there isn't going to be much I put in here because I am using a phone currently, but leave your ideas to make this idea better. Please and thank you!

So my idea is how some people like to try and use the fighting uke part of tutorial to practice.

There should be ways of having uke do more than just one move, like there can be; easy, medium, hard, expert. Every time you go up in difficulty he either does more turns or different moves. You should also be able to have him do things like; snapkicks or decap openers for aikido-type-mods. Be able to rush and skeet in mushu/wushu. Rush n' run in lenshu/taido. So on and so forth for all the other mods and the things people stuggle to foght in those mods.

Please, people do tell me what you think about this idea. Thank you! ^_^
