What's up with the "(Gift #4)!"?

if we didn't 'open' a random gift, the first person to go has a disadvantage because they only have one choice. Everyone else can either take something that they know what it is, or they can take a new gift. The first person would have only had the second option. Opening gift 4 was the solution to that.
