How much money can you make from developing a relatively successful game?

I'm doing computer game making as a subject for school next year and I'm still wondering about which Media-related career path I should choose.

And I'm pretty sure everyone here has had a moment in a game where he/she thought "I have an idea how to make this better/why didn't they think of that?". Creating something that makes you happy is the best job in the world. There was a saying "Find a job you love and you won't have to work another day". I would really like to do that for a living, as long as I won't be working with more than 30 people in a team. Since the video game business is making more money than ever(just look at CoD), the big bosses or whatever want to make games dumber and easier to play in order to cater to the masses. And sadly ,a lot of creativity is lost that way. I'd kill to be able to work with 30 creative and intelligent people in order to make something I myself would love to play afterwards. It's all about doing what you love(Zing! for those of you with dirty minds). It's not an easy process by any means ,since creating a simple 2D side-scroller is a hefty task. I even tried that 4 years ago,but a great deal of sh*t happened in reality and it was abandoned. I will eventually work in a game studio(however small it may be), but it won't be in this country. I might do rock climbing without safety gear and full-contact martial arts, but I'm not that crazy. In about 4 years time I should be done with my Bachelor's degree. Starting 2013 I will be going on Work&Travel student campaigns every year. I'll try to visit different countries(I would really like to visit Canada, USA and UK in that order). That way I could see the world and accumulate enough money to support myself while I try to get a VISA. That's part of the reason I am working while studying(so I can finance my first Work&Travel campaign). But like TRichard mentioned earlier, you have to work at your goals. If you don't do anything about it ,you won't achieve anything.

@ThePitcher : In my country school is 12 years. I started it at 6 years old(the custom here is to start it at 7), because I didn't want to sleep at noon in kindergarden(Seriously. I had to go through 3 books of tests before my parents let me go to school at that age). I managed to survive these 12 years while retaining my intellect and critical thinking. So far of the things I learned have been disturbingly useless. I actually finished school a mere 9 months ago. Started university and the job 2 months ago. But I started university as my way out(Work&Travel) and with the hopes of finding smart people there. It's much better than school. Teachers and students are on a whole different level, and you actually learn interesting things. And I met smart people, and you all know I like smart people. I would advise you not to quit, it will be over soon. In today's idiotic society you won't find many places to work without any kind of diploma. Once you're out of it you can either try to get a good job or continue studying. Keep in mind your country is much more developed than mine and you have very little to worry about. Of course, you can always try and start your own company/business, but it requires a capital, and I don't know if you posess that. If you want to be an artist or a designer, I don't think it matters much what you have studied. If you have an awesome and varied portfolio and you can demonstrate certain high-level skills on demand, you should be hired. At least that's what I think

yea, that's the same as me, i started school when i was 6 years old, i was supposed to stay in kindergarten for 2 years, but the teachers there said that i was ready and smart enough for primary school. yea, i must admit, it was a little hard being the youngest in the class, i wasn't teased or any of that, just that whenever we would do special programs, they would be by age order, and i would always have to go with the lower grade class.
Thanks for wasting my time dose. (Signature)

Got 6th outta 10 people in my R/C race. :]

yeah might be a bit offtopic but Minecraft was a school project too... And only like every 3rd person playing it has bought it, still Notch doesn't need to go to work anytime soon

Let's say as example:

You made a super-awesome game called "Buh!", you made it in a few months, developed it with the free Unreal Developement Kit, for modelling you used blender, for texturing gimp. With this setup you have paid nothing so far and can already create epic games.

Then you release the game in the internet, on a webblog for example. Some people will try it out, since we said it's super-awesome, the people will like the game and will recommend it to their friends. After this you decide to sell it for only 1 $ per game. (Thats far away from the amount you can ask for a super-awesome game, but the low price can get even more people to play the game.)

Now let's say the game gets "only" sold 500.000 times. (Since Mincraft and Super Meat Boy already reached over 1 million copies as independence game (means the developers don't belong to any publisher), it really could happen that you sell that much copies of your game.

On this point you made already 500.000 $. Now you could decide to sell the game on steam for 4 $. Steam haves alot of special offers all the time so your game could become even more famous as it was before. If you now sell only 100.000 more copies, you get around 3 $ for it. (I'm sure steam wants an amount of the money too, so we say they want 1 $).

So now you have 900.000 $, which is really easy to get atm. (Depending on the huge success of Minecraft and Super Meat Boy. Super Meatboy is a 2D game, which was made by 2 guys and first released as a free game on a online games site, but it became way more famous as they thought and released it on steam then. So currently you don't need to create a Call Of Duty clone, it's enough if you use your creativity. Not even the graphics care a lot atm, it's more about individual style and gameplay.)

Also I decided that I will stay at my school, at least until I have found a good job and they accepted me already. I think thats the best option I can use.

@Erickyle: I have nothing against a single ally so why not.

This is alittle of topic but Im messing around with a green screen effect in sony vegas and I need the best fight replay from all of you to test my theorys.

The replay style is very improtant in order for it to go smoothly and they can not be from single player , only multiplayer. Preferably in a running fight mod .

Styles I need : 1. Realistic
2. Slick moves - good paries , foot work , near misses and clean hits
3. One hit knock outs - devestating first hits , come backs and any move that makes you go " how sweet it is ".

If you have one of you fighting a lower belt and you end up just destroying him .. that works too , just make sure a stylish fight.

You can post them in the replay thread and lable them so that I know there for me .

If everything goes as planned , theres going to be a special surprise for all of you .

@2pro : Do you still have that replay of you kicking that guy in half in park.tbm? You jumped from the bench and split him in two lol . I would love to use that one .
