What is with this whole anti realism sentiment? Do you want ugly games? Also, I really enjoy a full cinematic experience in a game. Most games don't do a good job at this, but still. Video games are an art for whether you like it you not.

here's the problem with all the mentioned games: hype.

when you hype the shit out of something, no matter how good it is, it will suck compared to the hype.

Gonna disagree on two points.

The Halo series and Dead Space shouldn't be on this list.

Let's start with Dead Space.

Dead Space has a lot of these moments. Sure, they also step into mindfuckery a couple of times, I mean, it's sort of cool how you can suddenly get eaten by a wall, but they really need to do this more. I suspect the lack of proper horror is either laziness or ignorance from the developer's side. They figure that flinching is as good as primal fear so they just place most of their money on that.

This leads me to believe that you have never actually played the game, or have an extremely flawed memory. There are maybe five times I encountered a 'jump moment'.
One of those was the ending.
The rest is simply seething dread. After fighting through 5 decks of nasty, nasty shit that has no purpose other than killing you, you get to the Hydroponics deck where there is the Food Storage area. Pretty soon, you hear an unwelcome message over the comms.
"10 kiloton mass detected in Food Storage."

That is not a jump moment. That is a moment where you stop, sit back and think "Wait, WHAT?"

After fighting the Regenerator, realising you simply CANNOT kill it, it's like the fucking Terminator, oh jesus shit fuck just run, run for your life, escaping, and then encountering the motherfucker in an enclosed space at the dead end of a hallway, you know panic.

Hearing something on the other side of the wall wailing in a very unsettling way, that builds dread. Characters dropping comments about big things crawling around outside, that builds dread. Dying over and over at the hands of the motherfucking Regenerator, quitting and shitting your pants at the thought of facing it again, that is dread. It's what the whole game is about.

On to Halo.

There is a reason the Halo series is highly regarded.
It's fucking good.

No other FPS has seamless vehicular combat and foot combat. The weapons and vehicles are all incredibly balanced. There are no game breaking glitches, moves or cheats.
In Halo 3, you have an instant replay viewer, which can record movies and take screenshots. You have the Forge, which is a fully interactive map editor. In basic multiplayer, you can customise EVERY aspect of your gametype. Every weapon, every vehicle, every condition required for victory. It has superb stat tracking and matchmaking. It has a very easy to use control scheme. Combat consists of four aspects: melee, grenades, weaponry and vehicles. All blended seamlessly. And it's a console shooter.

It deserves its high regard.

i'd eat the fucking berries,

i'd say halo 3 was a big fluke, but halo:combat evolved was the greatest, it revolutionized the gaming experience, i'd say number 3 should be runescape, or WoW

Really? Yes the multiplayer was absolutely horrendous but the single player was, for me at least, one the most enjoyable single players campaigns I have played.

Anyway, I find myself agreeing completely with Halo and with GTA: IV. Both, especially GTA: IV, were overly hyped games that performed way below expectation. When GTA: IV was about to come out the hype was huge, so much that the Rockstar website crashed when so many people tried to watch the trailer (which also led to the first Rickroll if you didn't know), but the game itself was a major disappointment. I never actually got to the good bit, purely based on a personal principle that I shouldn't have to wait hours to actually have fun. So I just returned the game and got my money back.

Don't confuse my dislike for GTA:IV as a dislike for modern graphics. I never made such a statement.

Ok, so it might be the fact that I'm not a big fan of shooters on consoles, and this may have caused my immersion process to fail a bit but...I just didn't find it...scary. Well, not as much scary as it just provoked some mental stress, but mental stress is not the same as fear. Mind you, I thought it was fun and exciting. Maybe I should have focussed on horror games as a whole (because few hand out proper mindfucks).

I'll give it to you, the vehicle combat is actually quite good, but saying that it's more perfect than any other game in terms of foot combat is just bold. First of all, keep in mind; what is your preference? My personal preference is "Duck and Cover"-combat, which means I'm not a big fan of the large amount of running an gunning in Halo. But hey, maybe it's just that I'm not badass enough to try the hardest difficulty setting.

Ehh...you know, in my eyes, "perfect balance" would mean all weapons level eachother out, with an equal amount of strengths and weaknesses. And still, a guy manned with a rocket launcher and a sniper rifle should be pretty much able to rape his opponents, provided they don't come rolling in with tanks, ofcourse.

True, then again, cheating on consoles is tough. Hackers and cheaters are the curse of PC gamers.

I actually didn't know about this. That said, Battlefield 2 had a match recorder that fit perfectly for recording movies and screens. Nothing new, in other words.

Kudos to every game that has this.

Well, not EVERY aspect. It's hard to make your own functional vehicles and weapons, albeit requesting such a thing would be asking too much from a console. (Which obviously has limits.)

Superb? Define.

So why did you add "and it's a console shooter"? Is that some kind of excuse to make so that it may be judged on level terms with PC shooters? Ok, sorry (CHAC), I'm ripping off Yahtzee now but I really have to agree with him that if the console itself impedes the game due to it's own limitations, those factors have to be considered aswell. Yes, the control scheme is not horrible as opposed to a lot of other console FPS's but I'd still prefer using a mouse over an analog stick.

PS: Also, if you start going on about "skill when using the analog stick" I may need to suffocate you with a pillow.

What does Left 4 Dead have to do with Halo other than being first-person shooters?

(I haven't tried borderlands yet.)
