Well, anyone who doesn't respect you for that is an idiot anyways. Its one thing when native English speakers dont know how to use it properly, but if you dont speak the language ou cant be expected to be perfect at it. I would just ignore anyone who doesn't respect you over that, their respect is probably reserved for ass holes anyways.

^ Definitely. If it's a native English speaker, then perhaps he should hit the books if he wants respect from grammatically demanding people such as internet-users. He could however, acquire respect from an audience that generally has apathy towards intelligence, i.e, gangsta rap culture. (Yeah, I said it.)
I've never ever seen a guy get trolled for his grammar after he specified that English wasn't his first language.

Another thing is when two opposing men feud for a long time, they usually have an unspoken truce when they get tired of fighting all the time. I've seen and have been through this a lot.

Anyway, I think the top one is sometimes fun, say, walking up to someone and raising a fist and watching them scream like a little girl, but the bottom one is the one I would choose. I'd rather be loved than feared.

You can never gain respect from everyone because whatever you do, even if it pleases the majority of people, there will always be people that don't respect you.

Thats true because there are always gonna be people that think they are better than you and even if you are nice to them they will think you are infirior to themself and not give you respect. Sometimes getting respect can be what position of power you are in an example is a king. You may not know him or have ever met him but respect him based on the general knowledge that he has wealth and power.

Number 2 is obviously more the desirable one. When you have the kind of respects depicted by #1, the tables can turn very, very fast. People are just waiting for you to show a sign of weakness or for someone stronger or better than you to come along and take your place. In a time of need, nobody will be there for you. Whereas, if you have the type of respect depicted by #2, you can never go down without friend by your side.

Act kindly and don't demand respect. Showing respect gains respect.

Do you people actually wonder "am I respected"?

If a person doesn't respect me it's OK. Being a respected person is not a goal in life for me.

Live by your own ideals, if you get respected by doing that good if not too bad, it's not the end of the world. Trying to alter oneself to gain respect is despicable.

I think the best kind of respect is the mix of the two. Be kind, be cool, be trustworthy. If you are strong, don't abuse your power, but use it when needed. That grants you some respect aswell. But don't be a coward. Stand up for yourself, and for people who stand close to you aswell. That's my opinion.

Most of the time, people don't respect me. :P I try to get them to respect me by respecting them, they don't always respect me back though. They treat me as an inferior being, that's when I try scaring them into respecting me... Works most of the time.
