The definition itself provides the answer. An ally is what I posted above.
Obviously, in a situation of struggle or conflict, an ally will step in to aide or assist. in this case, I am stepping in to the conflict to assist my allies in battle. Should you have an alliance, you are welcome to ask them for assistance.
For the benifit, you will have to figure that one out for yourself...

The benefit on most games is help and aid and being social with each other. There really is no need for alliances on this game. I am against it.
