Yeah, they are both based in the god of the ancient jews, but they tend to have some pretty different beliefs, especially the fundamentalist ass hole American Christians who make up the staggering majority. To say that they are almost identical is a bit of a stretch I think. And yes, in time, and with generations having come and gone, most people don't really care about the injustice the old churches committed (the genocide and things)...but a lot of people also don't like Christianity for those, and other reasons.
Look at it this way, what if after all the child sexual abuse came to light some years ago, US catholic churches went around building multiple new churches very close to preschools/middle schools (the reason it is more than one church/school is to make up for the magnitude of 9/11 on the American psyche). Even if those churches had totally new priests who
really didn't like to touch little kids, people would not be happy about it and it would just be a stupid, insensitive thing to do.
I think it is a mistake to say that anyone opposed to it is somehow closed minded and doesnt understand that there is a whole other, bigger side to Islam (granted it is still pretty much full of shit, but its a religion). People need time to come to terms with traumatic events, and to expect New Yorkers to be just dandy with this is unrealistic, the memorial isn't even finished yet.
Im not against this because I don't understand Islam, or because I am totally 100% pro America. If there is one thing I like to think I have studied quite a bit in my life, it is religion, and as for America...meh. I'm against this because its just uncooth, regardless of whether or not you think they are justified, people are going to be pissed about this...It's only natural that they would be. You can't force tolerance and understanding on people, they have to learn it for themselves.
