PS2 had decent online capabilities, the one drawback being that if you lived in Europe, these features were hard, and costly, to access. Also, several 'Online Only' games came out on the PS2 (Twisted Metal Black had two versions - Offline and Online). Since, like the XBox, the PS2's ran on Broadband Only servers, there would be virtually no lag. This alone would be reason enough for people to assume the PS3 would have decent network gaming.
However, gaming is the only network capability that would be good... XBox 360 and Wii both have online marketplaces, so in the end most likely PS3 will fall short at this hurdle, but not by that much.
