Getting tattoos is not as lethal as jumping off high cliffs. I am no expert on either tattoos or cliffs, but I am pretty confident that you are spewing random bullshit now.
I can find you some sources if you wish.
How are you?

How sensible it is to get tattoos depends on who you are and what you want from life. Obviously if you want to work in a office then you have to look like a good office employee, so don't get a tattoo. If you want to look tough or get some respect from the sort of people who like tattoos then it isn't dumb to do that, you just shouldn't expect quite as much success in finding a career which doesn't revolve around or involve looking tough.

it's stereotypes like this that give tattoos a bad name. people don't get tattoos to look tough. there are 3 people in my physiology class that have tattoos and one is a nurse with a sleeve and chest tattoos. a lot more people are open to tattoos and as long as they aren't covering your body you don't look spooky at all and generally will not be put under prejudice for having them. it just depends on if your employer is open-minded or not. honestly it matters more about your credentials than anything whether you get a job or not, you can't blame the tattoo.
but with the knowledge that some people will be prejudice to it, they aren't that hard to cover up anyway. tattoos are a means of expressing yourself and your feelings, this other guy in my class with a tattoo had two elephants in the shape of a heart on his bicep. it looked dope so I asked him what it was for. he said his brother worked in a huge zoo and was killed by an elephant so the tattoo was a permanent reminder of his memory. on the other hand the final girl with a tattoo she had on her foot, is of a BLT sandwich. when asked why she got it she said because her sister suggested it when she was 18. obviously in that case you might call it a stupid tattoo, to get something with no relevant meaning to you just for shits. but most people with tattoos generally have meanings for them related to their feelings closely.
anyway, it's not as hard as you think to get a job with a tattoo. and even if you cover it up during the interview and get the job and the information that you have a tattoo is released later, you will not be fired on the spot if you're a good employee. jobs these days aren't that superficial that you would get fired for having permanent ink on your body.
back to being tough. I'd argue that anyone who looks tough with a tattoo would also look tough without a tattoo. it's not the tattoo that makes them tough.

on to piercings. I don't really agree with these since they generally do not have a meaning related to them. I'm all about doing stuff for a reason and if you're getting a nose ring just to look cool or different it's not really valid to me. but it's not my choice so I don't condemn or treat people differently who have them. it's all about your views on people as a whole and whether or not you judge a book by it's cover as the saying goes.
teeth marks on my goosebumps, the chains frostbit me.
I didn't mean that people only get tattoos to look tough or to show off. Just that, at least in England where very few people have tattoos, it can reduce your employability when finding a job (notice that I didn't say that it would cause a problem if you already had the job because firing people is a bigger deal than not hiring people). I feel like in other countries tattoos are a much more common thing but in England they are a pretty loud statement by themselves and it would be unwise to expect them to be ignored.

To be completely honest I got a nose ring because my girlfriend said I'd suit it so I got it, my thoughts behind it were "she's paying, if I don't like it I can just take it out" but honestly it's boosted my confidence a lot - more compliments from strangers and shit. It's nice.

In terms of looking scary, I'm 6'4, strong with a long history of martial arts but I'm the least intimidating person in the world - the tattoos I'm getting only amplify this as I'm getting 2-4 cat tattoos (my cat died last month and I want to immortalise him). My girlfriend has a very cute owl tattoo and my best friend has a cat tattoo too. (Astrocat.) But of course I've met people who try to look scary but most of them already have pretty secure jobs in the music industry (where I live there is one of the biggest alternative scenes in the world) but that's just one city.

My sister's Fiancé is 6'7, bearded, build like a brick wall and has many tattoos and piercings... He's also head chef at a very fancy restaurant. Looks aren't everything when you don't deal with customers. The shock some people have when they send compliments to the chef and this big hurly Viking comes out is quite amusing.

My opinion
In my opinion I do not mind minor body art. It is good to have a tattoo to another form of art, but only if it resembles something. I personally have a cross on my shoulder, in memory of my dad.
Although i am ok with body modifications there are so many health risks. As stated in:
"That finding, however, reported in the journal Body Image in 2011, has to be weighed against the potential dangers of body modifications, which can range from skin infections to the potential loss of vision or teeth. Attitudes toward beauty might be increasingly distorted or extreme, said Rod Rohrich, MD"
Infection is a big deal! if you are not willing to take care of your body modification, then you could potentially have a decline in health. So my outlook on body modification is it is ok if you have the self knowledge to take care of your body, to lower health risks.

Thanks for reading! have a torifick day!
Buying TCs for good rates starting the 3rd of every month. Pm if interested.
if you want to get one, go get one, if someone judges you then thats just what is going to happen, tattoos are really just a form of art to be fair, and a tattoo artist to be perfectly honest has to be pretty damn good artist to be able to do all sorts of crazy stuff with no option of 'erasing' or starting over.

i don't get the concept of piercings, but if someone wants one they can go for it i don't give a damn.

thats pretty cute, also if you don't mind asking, which city in the uk is that?

Tattos and piercings are really really personal thing. People do them for several reasons, not only to be cool or because feelings. My mother, for example, "had" a scary burn scar in her entire right shoulder and then she just made a big and colorful orange and red butterfly on it. She said she couldn't even wear non-sleeves t-shirt that people in the streets were passing and looking at her shoulder with pity. That seems awful.

Now the tatto hides that scary burn scar and people smile at that different "embossed" butterfly in her shoulder. It's pretty nice tho.

And for this thing about jobs and stuff... It's really depends from culture to culture. In North/northeast of Brazil people really discriminates people with tattoos, but in southeast/south people are more ok with tattoos and even piercings.

Also have you ever realized that it's really hard to find an athlete (of any Olympic sport) with a tattoo? :v

To do with blood transfusions, but a lot of soccer athletes are littered in tattoos.

Also I live in Glasgow
