Re: How good is you math? 0.999... = 1
This forum delets lots and lots of posts, how about a slap on the wrist, (In the form of a couple hours/day ban) say they were warned, and perhaps others won't make the same mistakes? 'Tis hard to know what has been wrong is you can't see it.

But for the topic- What's half of .999... and if .999... = 1, then 0.000... ...1 Must be equal to 0. Discuss.

Seriously, guys, we do not need 20+ posts of "omg this makez no sense math sucks kthx"

there fore... wikipidia sucks.

let c = 0.999... (10c = 9.999...)
10c - c = 9c
if 9.999... - 0.999... = 8.991,
:. 9c equal 8.999...1
10c-9c = 1.000...8
:. c = 1.000....8 = 0.999...

Something is definately borked in your logic.
c is equal to two irrationals here...
Then there is '10c - c = 9'
by expanding the equation we find that c = 1.
but we've just proven that it equals 1.000...8 and 0.999...

SOOOO....

c = 1 = 1.000...8 = 0.999...

Yeah. Something is definately borked in your logic. 9c and 10c - c are always the same, and cannot be different. Or else the universe has gone fucky.
Re: How good is you math? 0.999... = 1
HAHAHAHA! I PAWN YOU ALL! 0.9999999..... is actually a fictional number.
It is only theoretical, so therefore false. In that case you round it... to 1 ^^
If u disagree, i will get my school's whole mathematician club and teachers into this! Trust me, just agree...

Peace Out

Check it on a calculator if you don't believe me.

remember, the numbers tail off into infinity. both numbers are: 9.999...9 and 0.999...9 where the last 9s are both an infinite number of places away from the decimal point.

fictional number? What? Just because you cannot see 0.999... objects?
You have to make a choice. Either all math is theoretical, just like physics, or there is no such thing as a "fictional number".
Math and numbers is something that humans invented to help express other objects and findings. Since we invented it, everything is theoretical, and as such, anything can exist! Since there are rules in math, it then limits the possibilities, but 0.999... is a number.
I think that someone has told you something about this, and it has confused you, or you have not expressed what you meant correctly.

Re: How good is you math? 0.999... = 1
i mean in real life. We cannot see 0.99999999999999999999999999...9 numbers because they don't exist. nothing could be that perfect. maybe 0.99999999999999869786987968796879.... etc. If we go that deep, Squares and Rectangles don't exist! Well, theoretically in maths they do. But in the real world, NEVER! Hehe. They are all quadrilatrals, becasue with that theory, 90 degree angles and 2 lines the same length could never exist. Hangon... if 0.999...9 = 1. 1 Can't exist either, it couldn't be that exact. But we round to 1 anyway lol. Now get that round your head!

Peace Out

Re: How good is you math? 0.999... = 1
So, infact all you really mean to say is: You don't care about math which makes you think for 2 minutes.
Just because flying cars don't exist in the real world doesnt mean that it shouldn't be looked at. I mean, teleportation technology does exist now, even if it is only for small particles over a few metres at the moment, but if no-one cared to put their mind to it, we wouldn't even have that.

Re: How good is you math? 0.999... = 1
Me been off a few days. So. One thing:

In base 100, would zero point infinite sequence of 99-digits equal 1? And would zero point infinite sequence of 90-digits equal 0.999... base 10?
