There's a way to know if the opponent does shovel or not.
1) Observe his previous fights
2) If the 1st one cant be used, observe how other players act on that player.
3) If still not applicable, check the belt rank, but that's not so useful but it can help.
My suggestions to counter shovel/lifting moves
1) Don't let the enemy grab your torso or anything under your arms. If possible grab his torso too or his hands.
2) Keep your feet on the ground. Experiment with your ankles and glutes.
3) If you managed to stay on ground, don't push him in the same direction. Use your chest and lumbar. If your being lifted, throwing yourself away may distract him but its difficult. Or if you can get behind him, its good. Just maintain your weight to keep him under you.
4) And as most players say, shovel too.

I can also give a tip on shoveling. I love shoveling and countering shovels.
Since its not allowed to post moves, ill just give some idea.
At the start, do the basic shovel move. Then once you have grab your opponent, don't just leave your legs unattended. Do the running move while grabbing the enemy. It's not really the usual shovel where you lift your enemy and pull him down outside the ring. It's more like a sumo move, pushing the enemy out the ring.
