Your false dichotomies are as charmingly childish as ever, but at this point we both know you're not debating in good faith anyway. In fact, you never have been, pretty much ever. You mostly come to these threads to get high on your own self-assured certainty.

Regardless, you don't seem to understand that the intent doesn't really matter so long as it's still offensive. If you want to avoid offense, don't use a word that has a history of abuse and connotations of anger and oppression.

Ok man, if that's what you were trying to say it's fine, it's just that isn't what it sounded like.

I don't think that use of 'gay' is considered offensive by reasonable people.

"people who disagree with me are just wrong"

Another great and thoughtful contribution.

It's unreasonable because the English language changes very quickly. Are you offended by "boy", "bugger" or "goliwogg"? All of these were extremely offensive even 30 years ago.

I don't think the 12 year olds playing CoD calling each other 'gay' mean any hate towards homosexuals, it has lost all connotation.

As always, if you are offended by something, that's great, stay away from people who say it. But you can't stop people from using something they view as harmless. A few years ago there was an add on tv that said "bugger" 20 or so times. Sure, some older people were offended, but it's not a big deal.

Except for the many times "faggot" is followed by "suck a dick," and other phrases that clearly indicate it is still used as a tool to demean homosexuals.
You do not get to decide what connotations a word has and whether you mean to associate them with it.

Do you have any idea how much you reek of smug condescension? "If you don't like the United States, get out." Both of these ideas are incredibly stupid for the same reasons.

Right. And no one is trying to prevent you from using slurs, they're just asking you to stop.

Nah man, if only a few people are hurt, it ain't a big deal.

You'd assume that would only offend heterosexuals, but for whatever reason a couple homosexuals were offended (I assume, I didn't look into how the campaign started)

I'd say "That's so gay" would be the homosexual equivillant of "That's so straight" for heterosexuals, but homosexuals tend to be a bit more sensitive because of all the little homophobic children they grew up with, and they are "different" (I do not mean that in a demeaning way, I'm just stating it is out of the norm)

I personally say That's so gay/retarded, or call my friends that, but I know homosexuals that use it a hell of a lot more than I do...

Right, because homosexuals suck dicks, I get it. Obviously anyone who says "faggot" or "suck a dick" is demeaning homosexuals. I mean, too bad that isn't true at all. There are some connotations that people should be aware of, but definitely not offended by.
Some people are obviously so insecure in their homosexuality that they think people using "gay" is such a huge threat to their identity (which in their mind, homosexual = good) that they have to stop people using it at all costs! It reminds me a lot of "What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux".

That's how society works most of the time. I know you have your ideals, but the truth is you can't just make a shitty ad campaign and change how people speak.

Which people aren't going to do, and the words will naturally lose connotation with time anyway - as has already happened with gay. Yesterday I played Diablo 2 with a guy, and he said the lack of unique drops was 'gay'. Obviously he wasn't saying that unique drops prefer to have unique drop life partners.
Once again Boredpayne fails to understand that the meaning of words changes over time, even though a few posts ago I explicitly pointed it out.

That's right, it really isn't a big deal. Some people are over sensitive, and they force their ideals on everyone else. It's a bother for everyone else.

I still think it's funny that you are OK with saying "dumb" or "stupid" because you personally don't care, but if it's "gay" then oh no, someone might be offended! You seem very personally vested in the topic, so let me tell you the correct way to handle the situation:
If someone calls you gay or uses gay around you and you are offended say "hey, that offends me, please don't do it". If they stop doing it around you, great. If they don't, then an ad campaign probably wouldn't help anyway.

Another point of interest: "jock" is not offensive, but "gay" is? These people obviously are only interested in their own interests, throwing words like "dumb", "stupid" or "jock" around so wantonly. These people are so "gay guy that sucks a dick"! (apparently people say that)

Yeah, why would those "different" homosexuals be sensitive to words shouted at them as they're physically abused by other children?

There is no argument here, just a long-winded, smarmy way of saying "you're wrong."

STOP FORCING YOUR IDEALS ON ME BY POLITELY INFORMING ME THAT'S OFFENSIVE TO YOU

I have never been aware of anyone who felt personally targeted by the word "stupid."
If you happen to be mentally challenged and you still feel that the word is directly associated with you, I apologize.

Hahaha, are you trying to guess my sexuality? Not that it matters, but you're wrong. And let me tell you something: your advice is literally worth less than shit to me.

Let me know when somebody's person is attacked because they are a muscular athlete, and I'll take this seriously.

It was kind of the point of the whole thread. Perhaps when you and Cow are done spewing on and on about whatever tangent you guys went off on... you can provide feedback to the actual issue at hand.

The hypocrisy of the campaign and their attempt to fight stereotypes with stereotypes. I.E. Assuming all jocks use the word "gay" and can't complete a sentence.

The irrelevant tangent you refer to is actually the core point of this discussion. You're attempting to denigrate the central issue of the campaign that you made a thread about, which comes across as absurd.

I don't think you understand the fundamental idea of hypocrisy or what it means in the context of this discussion.
The campaign is designed to hold up a mirror, to show that insults which target a specific group are still offensive to that group, even when used in a different context. It's literally taking what people are saying with the word "faggot" and creating an analogous statement, designed to reach out towards those who have never felt as persecuted, in a provocative manner.
I guess you could call that hypocrisy, even though it's deliberately used as a tool to demonstrate the wrongness of your own actions.

Of course you are wrong, you just randomly said "I am clearly right, it's so obvious". Insulting someone in any way is demeaning, but calling something 'gay' does not demean all homsexuals everywhere implicitly. It's a completely idiotic chain of thought.

This thread is about whether it is a good campaign. It is not, because this is reality. Are you saying society is not part of reality?
And I never said it's wrong to use the word 'gay'. I give zero shits as to whether not you call random things gay. But as always, don't insult people - homosexuals or hetrosexuals.

That's part of why the campaign is terrible, it advocates insulting everyone - except homsexuals. Great message 10/10

As usual, America is fuck. I bet the same homosexuals who are offended will sit there quietly not saying anything if they hear someone use that word in real life, then later go home and make aggressive internet posts.

Joking, I don't apologize.

Full of derp Boredpayne. Please read it again without the misconception that I was calling you a homosexual.

The worst part is that they use the term "jock" without even acknowledging that it is a slur. That's like saying:
'That's so "faggot who loves dick more than he loves his own mother."'
See why this campaign is bad? It perpetuates offensive stereotypes and slurs in order to server it's own purposes. Imagine if Martin Luther King Jr stood up and said "African-Americans deserve equal rights because we aren't filthy Mexicans". Great job showing that you aren't against slurs or demeaning stereotypes in general, just ones that affect your specific interests.
