I don't use mobile phones, myself, but I do see a problem with this idea. Specifically, companies do not have enough incentive to do this. Currently, phones are discarded not only due to non-functionality, but also, because the user wants to buy a newer phone. These companies have already succeeded in instilling this mindset within us, that we must continuously keep up with the times. Selling an individual part, rather than an entire phone, means:
- less revenue per annum for companies, as there would be less demand for a specific part, rather than a new, improved phone
- loss of brand loyalty; rather than buying the best possible phone, the consumer has the freedom to buy the best possible components
- a rather complex motherboard that would allow for these blocks to function correctly, which would be more expensive to develop and produce, thus increasing the selling price; if it stopped functioning, the user would need to pay more to buy a replacement phone
- needless risk for the company to adopt such an idea in favour of the current economic model, which works
*I'm not an economics major, so if you happen to have good reason to disagree with any of these points, I'd like to know why.
The main problem, of course, is that this idea does not solve the problem presented in the video. If this idea was accepted, companies would continue to sell newer versions of their products, and consumers would continue to buy them year after year.
For a comparison, look at energy production. The arguments backing the use of solar and wind energy is a lot more sound than the phonebloks idea, yet fossil fuels are still being used.
