Well, the trick I would of used is to cp the we pwn text onto another layer below the original, and colored it black and gaussian blurred it, then erase parts of the original text.
You may have not done it as so, but it sounds about right.

That's almost right. But I just used the drop shadow filter, so I didn't have to make another layer.
