But it only has a 2 week battery life I believe so that may be out of the finding.
The box sends out a ping every hour. It has a battery life of a month. They've already used the pings the box sends out to determine it's last known spot in the southern Indian Ocean, which would have been near the end of it's fuel. There are no land masses in that area. All evidence points towards a landing in one way or another in the middle of the ocean.
Finding the debris would confirm it, but all evidence up to this time supports that it has crashed.
And the reason they want the black box is because it stores important information about what was happening in the plane from take off to landing. Basically it allows for actual forensics work to determine the causes of the crash. It will stop pinging, but it will still hold the data. A French plane crashed off the Brazilian coast a few years back and it took them two years to find the box from the plane, but it still had the information.
And why the hell are theories where the plane and passengers are intact still going around? There is nowhere the plane could have landed along its likely path that would have allowed for anybody to disembark. There is no land, let alone civilizations, anywhere near it's last possible location. They are all, in all likelihood, dead.
