IMO killing Osama, justified or not was just killing a figurehead everyone is familiar with so that people can see that "you don't fuck with the United States". (Even though it's largely their fault he was a problem.)

There are several reasons courts would have served justice better than murder in this case. 1) The USA claims moral superiority over terrorists. It's therefore hypocritical to sink to their standards of justice. 2) There was never enough evidence for the FBI to even associate bin Laden with 9/11 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9t6Za2qmPN4). 3) The government absolutely knows how to capture people alive - "extraordinary rendition" - their secret abductions of so-called enemy combatants is quite common. It was an absolute debacle to kill the person who is supposedly the most knowledgable in the world about what is supposedly the greatest threat to the US, rather than interrogate and try him in a court of law. If the official story is even true, there's not much they could have done to screw it up worse.
