Completely agree.

...but am I the only one who thinks that newbs who have recently signed up shouldn't get +10 rep automatically?

EDIT: Crap, didn't see pages 5 & 6. >.<

I have good rep, I just think the rep system is dumb!
(although I do like PID666's idea about removing the rep and keeping the comments, not to bad... but not anonymous)

-rep Juntalis for getting his facts wrong!!!

heh... kiddin'

I completely agree with 666. It will, mostly, stop the people from giving -rep because they don't like them, and +rep because they gave them 100 tc. The name of the commenter should also be added, if possible. That way, you could see who is commenting on you, so you could tell a mod/admin, or just leave them a comment. This would be effective, because if someone criticized me on a post that deserves a negative comment, what would I say to them?

"Stop giving me negative comments!"
"n00b i haet you"
"<insert random mix of swears here>"

Then, if someone saw mine and their comments, they would obviously disregard my comment, because it has no meaning. If someone I give someone a negative comment that is actually viable, then the same will go for them. If a group of people send out stupid, negative comments to one person, they will be regarded as immature people and will not be taken seriously.

B&B&B&
sweet idea spidey +rep.

hahahaha sry could not resist. (i really did).

Personally, I don't care either way too much, but I will say this:

1. I like giving + rep. It's a way of saying "gj" beyond just... eh saying gj .
2. People don't use it well, but nothing is perfect. Let's keep using it even though it's not being used well.
3. These forums are the nicest of any gaming forums I have ever been a part of. I think the rep system is part of this.

maybe just get rid of negative rep so it's only a positive system?

Just my two toricredits. ciao.
Now why would they do that though? You need some negativity to keep a community working correctly. Or something along that line lol ;P
Back in my day...
Ok im gonna break down how a reputation system is supposed to work and why it benefits the community.

Basically the reputation system is supposed to stimulate the community and basically improve the quality of posts people make. The rep is supposed to be achieved and awarded by peers that the person is doing a good job and keeping everyone informed on something or helping others out. Or in the case of a -rep someone that has scammed, been rude, or spammed in the past. The - rep is not supposed to be given just because someone came up with an idea that has been posted before or you simply just don't like the idea. If you just give rep for little to no reason the system becomes useless and means nothing. I think that displaying the members rep in bars next to name will shows how RESPECTED that member is, granted the rep is legit and is worth something. It also shows that person can be trusted and if asked for help that person will help out. So in order to have a system like this you have to make the rep worth something rather than meaningless, hate to say it, spam. A big part of why the rep system is in the state it is now is because of the Mods and i know i will get hate for this but its true. Mods are supposed to set examples and HELP members out. Not just post "fail" and then ban someone or tell them they are dumb. Here is an example of a GREAT mod on another forum. Here is ONE of many of his quality posts that contribute to the community. I know that community is not the same as this one but i believe that is one of the BEST, CLEANEST, and well KEPT forums on the internet. The rep system on that forum MEANS something.

Now if you are thinking im gonna post "fail" and then -rep him you have already lost the battle. The way to combat and make this forum a QUALITY and respectful forum is to take what i say and think about it. If you dont agree with what i say please point out why and expand on it. Make points that you think are important and express them to everyone and trust me this can be done without saying bad words or calling the person names. This thread i was -repped in but as you can see i was contributing to the thread and coming up with ideas. I would also like to point out that after i had made my statements and proved that the system can work and be put in place. As you can see the last poster was obviously inspired and contributed to the thread in a good manner.

Format i would like to see the rep system in:
Bars next to names along with POSTS
Reps only seen in user CP
When you hover over the rep bars you see a message like "Tivo has a spectacular aura about"

The biggest part to make this work is, and im sorry to say it is, the quality of the mods needs to change.

Ohh yeah this is all IMHO

Uh, you have two distinct thoughts there.
A. Mod quality on these forums should improve, and we should help members out more.
B. Rep should mean something (somehow related to mods being nice?)

Please explain how a moderator explaining things to a new user will do anything besides get him bonus rep. That wont change the state of the rep system at all. Like, really. The only way the way the quality of the rep system will change is if the USERS bring it on themselves to only give + or - rep for noteworthy posts.

I do agree that moderators could be more helpful, though, but I think it is fairly unconnected to reputation. Furthermore, I prefer judging people by my own experience with them, so rep systems here, and on other sites I frequent, mean little to me.
It's funny how these sorta debates roll around all the time...
This is the Emergency Alert System. All normal programming has been discontinued during this emergency.
I know this is a couple pages past the topic, but I complety agree with what 666 said. My version though is just get rid of it completly. Get rid of the whole reputation system, but replace it with a commenting system. Its doesn't give people bad rep or plus rep. People just leave comments about what they think of it and they should be able to tell for them selves if that person liked what they posted or disliked.
