I went through the whole 8th grade without being required to read one full book.

teachers at my school demanded 2 hours every week. (for 6th grade)
and in 5th grade it was 1 hour a night.

we had to finish 3 books by the end of the month with a total of 10 hours.
every week i finished with 20+ hours one week i had 54hours

I respect...
These days, people have more stuff to have fun with.
I honestly like reading, the first book I read was when I was 11, the book was Marley & Me.
350 pages, I think? I thought it was a lot, but when I started reading, the book was so fun.
But recently, I haven't read much books. When I was younger, I used to read some Disney comics =P I still have a big-ass collection of them. I used to read three books every night, because they were small.
In my school, we read a book every year in classes, but those things are so tiny, I could end it in 10 minutes on my own. It's like 70 - 100 pages.
But I have to agree, people don't read not even half of what people read years ago.
oh yeah

Sure, if you ignore EVERY FACTOR EXCEPT COST... However, I don't like to just randomly ignore things, so I would simply say, you are wrong.

In what context do you say 'formal letters'?

People misuse many things, but that doesn't mean you should be completely against those things...

"setting an example"... If they are in a position to set an example, they are in a position to define it.

Pick 1 or more.

You don't find it to be the digital equivalent of Teeline? Please explain.
They have the same goals and techniques, so what is wrong with the parallel?

Well if you choose not to use it, then that is your problem isn't it?

Actually reading a book takes more time, and requires a harder to find situation. It is also less social; when people watch TV or watch a movie they generally don't do it alone, they do it with their friends, they all share the experience. Books are by nature solitary and time consuming, not something as easily shared. It is not a choice between "lazy" and "active" (though, you are possibly the only person to argue that books are more active), it is a choice between "social" and "solitary".
How can you argue that? ^^

Not a come back, just clarifying.

You stated every factor, and I commented on each one separately. I didn't ignore each one, But cost is out of the issue now, we can agree on that. And to simply say I'm wrong with out any argument doesn't help.

I've received letters in the mail from friends, and they write in txt speak. Not as formal as a letter to Obama, but still show some class.
By the way, these are my opinions, I understand you may feel different and that's fine.

I'm starting to feel you never read my response. I never said it was wrong. I just find it annoying in certain situations. And they're not many of those situations.

Fair enough.

I'll choose other. I can understand it, but sometimes it takes me a while to figure out what they're trying to say. Example. (This is from a friend who recently texted me) "Wat tim is the 5pm game?" My answer.. 5? Turns out he meant something like, "Is the game at 5pm?"

It is, I completely agree. I won't ever use it. It's not like I feel I'm above everyone else I just don't like it.

Watching a movie with friends is more social your right, I won't argue that. But, books can be easily shared, if you discuss it with someone else who has read the book. Find my quote where I said books are more active. I may have said books contain more detail. I've never heard anyone say, "lets go watch the movie instead of reading the book because then we can all share the experience. They may have said, "lets go watch the movie, it's faster than reading the book." Which is fine. I like to do both read the book and watch the movie. But usually it's a kid saying "I don't want to read the book, it's easier to just watch the movie." And that's where I find it a bit lazy. To never have read a book, just because it's easier to watch the movie.
I used to read all the time before I had access to computers or had reading assignments from school. After having to read through 30 pages of textbook reading every day, I became pretty sick of reading. And now, I have to read this horrible book "The Good Life" for college. It's all about Harvard and faith. The thing is, I can't feel good reading any other book when I know that this book is also there, waiting to be read. It makes pleasure reading a guilty activity.

I'm a cool kid, I like reading, what now?

/ontopic techie type books are annoying: "The hypoelectrical thesis states that protocol must dictate an anthropodigal antroinsumation of the asymetric algorythm."

I hate the above.

On an off note, I was at Hastings looking at books, and there was a book called Go the F**k to Sleep, and it actually looked like a babies book. It said something like "The lights are on at night in the town, please go the F**k to sleep."
It was hilarious.

Go the F*ck to sleep is the best book ever created my man, woman, and child.
