Going to Minefield is risky, but it can earn you a Sniper Rifle, and, if you don't screw up, a metric f*ckton of Frag Mines. And, after getting the snipers key, you can enter all the houses in the area, giving you access to moar shizzle.
Also, beware the burning cars.

Oh yes, and the part where Moira Brown wants you to get irradiated? It's totally worth it to get the 600 rads. Earns you a sweet perk. Though i'm not revealing which one, you'll have to find out yourself. :3

Heh, minefield was fun. I killed the sniper by luring him down and headshotting him with my shotgun from behind. You can also find parts for the shiskebab easily in minefield.

I just did did the "stealing liberty" quest, got the declaration of independence, bill of rights and stole a relic hunters SMG by making her trip on her own mines. That place has some epic loot too, especially since I have both fortune finder and scrounger.. got like 600 more energy cells and >1000 caps

There's another Sniper Rifle, in a hallowed rock [Megaton's South].

On a side note, does anyone else find the Ripper kind of... Lame? It's pretty neat when just sawing out in the air, but it's horrible when you use it in VATS. Why the hell don't you actually saw the bastards, instead of "lol i tap u wif mah knoif >:("? I suppose it would've been pretty hard to do a proper sawing without locking the characters together, but hell, you could at least swipe a little with the damn thing >.>
Also, anyone else got hold of the Protectron's Gaze? It's pretty floogin' awesome, i tell you.

It's like a shotgun-laser pistol. Hits like a freighter train at point blank, and it only uses one energy cell per shot.

Sounds nice, I dont have any use for energy cells right now so that could be useful (400 plasma rifle ammo :P), where can you get it?

spoiler:I just ran into an enclave vertibird next to the library, got my tesla armor and plasma rifle upgraded to 80% ;o Also got the sniper perk... damn is it useful.

I've got the sniper perk, and the perks that improve your accuracy with big & small guns, so most of my % in V.A.T.S. is 95 now =D

And is Moira Brown the shopkeeper in megaton?
